spidermonky 0 #1 June 29, 2003 I moved back into my parents house for the summer and it's close to I-40. I keep noticing CB radio conversations over all the speakers in the house. My computer speakers, my sisters cd player, even our home surround sound picks it up. The only thing I haven't heard it on is my guitar amp. Is there a way to stop this? If I buy really good computer speakers, will this still happen?
CloudOnMyTongue 0 #2 June 29, 2003 Maybe it's not a CB radio. Maybe your just schizo~jk~

ChileRelleno 0 #4 June 29, 2003 OK, the great Chile Relleno just happens to be a "Trucker" and I can answer your question... We (truckers) like to call it "Putting a little fire in our wire". First thing we do when we get a new CB is get it "Peaked and tuned", the normal output wattage is aprox 7-9 watts, peak it and your putting out 20-30 watts which means a stronger signal and thus more range when you transmit. Then just to make sure everyone for 10-15 miles can hear us and cannot cancel out our signal with their signal if they key-up at the same time (we call it getting "walked on') we add a linear amplifier to our CB to even further boost our output, now we're talking 100- 500+ watts of output . The downside (for you and others) and technically illegal side of this is now we can "Bleed over" onto to other frequencies such as your TV, stereo, and other CB channels. Heck if I'm really close to you you can even hear it thru your speakers with your gear turned off! Thats what your hearing and why its happening, now as to how to fix it... Hmmm, perhaps a RF choke? But that wouldn't work for your house... Hmmm ponder that... We need to seek the advise of a sound tech, dang I guess I can't answer your actual question. Goodluck! ChileRelleno 0 #5 June 29, 2003 I KNOW, I KNOW!!!! Get a a big base station (CB/HAM Radio) for your house and push more power than the truckers and annoy the hell out of'em with endless chatter about religion, politics and inane babble. With a good unit no one could walk on you and it drives us (truckers) nuts! MarkF 0 #6 June 30, 2003 Well Chile has given you the reason why it's happening. Basically what happens is that after all the "tweaking and peaking" usually ends up with the transmitter output being "dirty". It's putting stuff out on frequencies other than the one desired. Then that whole mess goes into an allegedly linear amp which has probably been "t & P'd" to the point of distortion and more rubbish. If you feed that lot into the typical nearly-resonant mobile antenna and you get even MORE dirt accross a great deal more spectrum than desired. It's this crap that you're hearing. The power of the transmitter is largely irrelevant - the products of non-linearity are the problem. I used to live next door to an Amateur Radio operator who regularly ran the full legal limit. I never heard anything from his station in my radio. I heard 27MHz CB splatter from the nearby freeway constantly. If you're getting the feed through just about everything - except maybe the lawnmower - you'd be pretty safe to assume that it's getting in through the power lines. You can take a couple of approaches here. If you call the electricity company and carefully explain what's happening they _may_ send someone out to have a look. That someone will probably suggest all sorts of pretty pricey things to get rid of the interference most of which will work. You could _try_ telling them that all they need to do is to bypass any RF to ground BEFORE the electricity meter. They may or may not listen but, HEY, it's worth a try...:-) The other option is to find a nearby HAM and offer to exchange a few beers for an opinion. ( PM or e-mail me with a location and I'll try and tee something up - I talk to US HAMS pretty regularly given goodish conditions...:-) ) The nearby HAM will be interested for two reasons. (S)he'll be shit scared that its him / her that's in danger of blowing up final output stages or getting a complaint from the FCC - regulatory authorities the world over a SAVAGE on HAMS stepping a little bit outside the regs...:-) The second reason is that they may well be having the same trouble and having another setup to examin can often reveal the "One True Way" of eliminating the interference...:-) Hopefully helpfull..... rjackson 0 #9 June 30, 2003 Yep thats about all he can do. If its a CB'er (Childrens Band), the FCC has pretty much given up on trying to control those guys so the only thing you can do is filter the power. If the offender is really close he may just be overloading everything in the house. Good Luck. MarkF 0 #10 June 30, 2003 QuoteHey Mark, is that the pebble y'all call (see if i remember right) Ayers Rock in your Icon? Indeed it are - the Aboriginal ( and correct ) name for it is Uluru...If you, or anyone else, ever get there please don't climb it - for two reasons. The local indigineous owners don't like it in much the same way as it wouldn't be appreciated if I went and climbed Wesminster Abbey... Ooroo Mark F... ChileRelleno 0 #11 June 30, 2003 Childrens Band, now thats funny and oh so true sometimes. Ch19 is so overloaded with radio rambos, yingyangs, asswipes and degenerates that we often refer to it as "Sesame Street". you can't drive anywhere near a truckstop/major city with hearing so much trash that you have to shutdown, really a shame. Remember that trash talking segment you hear is really a small majority with really bigmouths. For most of us truckers its a invaluable tool helping us navigate the perils of our nations roads i.e. bad weather, construction, wrecks, directions to shipper/receivers and the ever important "Bear Reports" ect ect ... If, however, the local HAM can localize the source to one rogue base unit at the neighbor's or something, the FCC can and will step in and throttle it. Or the threat of taking it to the FCC by the HAM may be sufficient -- heck, he may not even have to act tough, I once had a guy with a hotted up mobile stop using it near my place when I casually mentioned I could hear him over my surround speakers; those long wire runs make great antennae. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

spidermonky 0 #19 June 30, 2003 My parents are OTR team drivers and I've spent several summers riding with my dad. I know all about ch19 and I don't think that's what I'm normally picking up. There are a few voices that I'm starting to recognize. I hadn't thought of HAM, but that's a good possibility.
