I always found that "yes mom" (my mother actually had a lot more opinions than my MIL) and then doing whatever I was going to do anyway worked pretty well. Followed closely by "why don't do you that and just tell me what to do" if I really didn't care how it was done. Of course, if the cleaning lady puts away the clean dishes, I really don't care if I have to hunt for some of htem, too.
