Michele 1 #1 July 2, 2003 I don't know for sure...But I seem to have spyware or something like that on my machine. Out of nowhere, when it has not happened before, I am getting these pop-up windows that are advertising several different things... I don't know how to scan for it, and I don't know what *free* nuke'm stuff is available. Any hints? darkvapor 0 #2 July 2, 2003 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ I'd also look into installing a personal firewall. I want to know everything that is coming into and leaving my computer. A good firewall will keep those programs from accessing the internet and sending out data about you. http://www.firewallguide.com/

andy2 0 #5 July 2, 2003 install ad aware and "spybot - search and destroy". Between the two they should get everything. Michele 1 #13 July 2, 2003 Thanks, everyone... 'Kay, after trying to figure out this hi-tek computer stuff, I managed to get the download started....I'll let you all know what I find (and no, Clay, I don't surf porn...). Also, does anyone know of a good virus scanner? I've been getting slower and slower page loads, and cleaning cookies just don't seem to help like they used to. Did a defrag, but also want to check and see that. Ciels- Michele ~Do Angels keep the dreams we seek While our hearts lie bleeding?~

darkvapor 0 #16 July 2, 2003 It looks like you opened the executable in a text editor. If you are using Windows, then you do not need any shell. Just execute the program and follow the prompts.
Michele 1 #17 July 2, 2003 QuoteJust execute the program and follow the prompts. I tried. It told me "NO. Go find something to open it with." So I tried. And then it said, "you stupid chick. darkvapor 0 #18 July 2, 2003 Your computer doesn't recognize executable files? I've never seen that. Did you lose the .EXE extension or something? Your using a recent version of Windows (98/2k/XP)? Edited: Just to make sure we are on the right page, you got the following executable right? It should be called AAW6.EXE. If not, get it from http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/0,fid,7423,fileidx,1,00.asp

Michele 1 #21 July 2, 2003 Quoteust execute the program and follow the prompts. Maybe I'm soooooooooooo stupid I don't know how to execute a file. Just click on it, right? darkvapor 0 #22 July 2, 2003 Just click on it, right? If it has an EXE extension, Windows will recognize it as an executable. Double clicking on it will execute the program. Or you can right click it once to bring up some choices, such as executing it ("Open"), or checking its properties. edited: You can look at the properties of the file you got and make sure it says "Application" under "Type of File". Make sure the file name also ends in .EXE, although that should be the case unless you accidently renamed it to some other type of file.

darkvapor 0 #25 July 2, 2003 Run the program by going through the Start menu. Start -> Programs -> Lavasoft Ad-Aware 6 -> Ad-Aware 6. Then when the program opens go to "Check for Updates Now." Let it install the the newest update it finds, and go back to the main program screen. Then click "Start." The default options should be good. Then just let it run. This may take a few minutes. When its done, just go through all the prompts saying Yes or Next. You will get to a screen that has the results of the scan. You can see what it thinks is bad. I think Ad-Aware is pretty good at leaving legitimate programs alone, so you can almost ignore what it says. Just let it quarantine the files it found. If your computer doesn't break from what this program removed (it shouldn't) you can delete the quarantined files later (should be an option to see quarantined archives from the main screen).
