baa75 0 #1 July 2, 2003 Yes, I am Officially Freaking Out!! My ACL surgery is now less than 24 hours away and my nerves are driving me crazy! This is my first skydiving related injury, which has now lead to my first surgery! The landing wasn’t anything spectacular. I flared a little too early and dropped down on my feet. I felt the impact in my knees and they gave out. I didn’t even think I was actually hurt, just thought I’d shake it off. Until the pain kicked in and I couldn’t get up off the ground. A trip to the ER, 3 ortho surgeons, a bunch of X-Rays and an MRI later…it’s a torn ACL. From what I understand a torn ACL is fairly common. Anyone else do this? How did it happen? Did you get the surgery? How long did it take to heal? To jump again? I’ve already chewed off all my nails and by this time tomorrow I won’t have any fingertips left! BettyAnn Getting married? Genn 0 #2 July 2, 2003 Honestly...you;re screwed for the rest of the season. Advice from someone who has been there....Go to a GOOD physical therapist...one who specializes in sports. They will get you healed the quickest. Sorry for your pain Good Luck!

Nuke 0 #6 July 2, 2003 Tore mine playing football, yes the helmet kind and in Sweden, tried surgery with local anestesia first time (the knee was too infected so they had to abort and try again later). Second time went better, deep sleep, but I only cleaned things up and didn't put anything new in. Was completing my exams at the time so I didn't have time to do a proper rehab, took maybe 6 months to get it back to full strenght again, I still have stability problems if I slack my weight lifting. The rehab time I mentioned is as far as I understand very individual. If you have your rehab as your first hobby than I think everthing will work out just fine. Take shortcuts and you will pay for it, at least from my experience. I wouldn't recomend you to do a hard landing/PLF:s until you have full stability either. Your orthopedist should be able to tell you when it's safe to try again. A good surgeon/orthopedist, a good rehab that will have to take as long as it must will have you back on track as good as new. /Markus
baa75 0 #7 July 2, 2003 Quote Honestly...you;re screwed for the rest of the season. Thanks. I kinda figured that this season is done. I’m not happy about it but there’s not really much I can do now. What really sucks is that I just finally got all my gear in. My new HotBod suit actually came in the same day I got hurt! Now I have to wait till next year to jump it. I know I’m going to have to rehab hard but how soon till I can ditch the crutches? BettyAnn Getting married? Check out my website!
Airdivr 0 #8 July 2, 2003 You will be fine.... please call me or e-mail me anytime with questions. The surgery is easy...the next day or so is rough (as I told you), but you have me as your role model! LOL Remember, 3 days after surgery I ran the Jump for the Cause event at Cross Keys and you didn't even notice me looking miserable!!! Also, ditch the crutches as soon as you can. Anyway, good luck with the surgery, stock up on lots of ice packs....you can never use too much ice after surgery... and get to physical therapy within 3-7 days and make sure they are sports medicine related. Call the DZ and ask for Lauren if you need my cell number. I'm more than willing to do anything I can to help you, but the best advice I can give is to bust butt in PT after surgery. It's been 9 months for me now and I'm not even wearing a brace to jump. The only weirdness (besides pain during pressure changes) is that kneeling is out and shaving your knees requires extreme caution because one side is totally numb. That took some getting used to, but other than that life is pretty good. I jumped after 3 months (using extreme caution and waiting for 8-15 steady winds so I didn't have to run anything out). I still slide in on no wind days, but outside of that, you'll be up and at em in no time. Love, Elaine

Nuke 0 #10 July 2, 2003 Quote I know I’m going to have to rehab hard but how soon till I can ditch the crutches? At home doing normal stuff maybe a week, maybee sooner. Everything else is individual but I threw mine away for good after another 2 weeks. /M
baa75 0 #11 July 2, 2003 Yikes! Ok, that doesn't scare me or anything! Going through the surgery 1 time is enough! I've been known to slack with rehab so I'm going to need a push to keep me moving. Having 2 yr old twins at home should count as some kind of rehab though, right? BettyAnn Getting married? Check out my website!
Casie 0 #12 July 2, 2003 Sorry you're having to go thru this It does suck! Apparently the doctor told me in 9th grade that I was born with extra tissue that overlapped as I grew & became more athletic. Once the tissue overlapped it was my bone touching bone & rubbed all the time I had orthroscopic done in 10th grade & was in excellent health. Had a hard time healing however & my knee stayed swollen for like 3 months. It's all good now, but would not want to go thru it again. Good Luck & hope you have a speedy recovery~Porn Kitty WARNING: Goldschlager causes extreme emotional outbursts!
Nuke 0 #13 July 2, 2003 Quote Having 2 yr old twins at home should count as some kind of rehab though, right? You better tie them up, tripping on them or their toys is not recommended. Make that a point to remember. No tripping, it hurts like hell (at least in my experience) the first weeks. /M

baa75 0 #15 July 2, 2003 Thanks Elaine. You know you were the first person I wanted to talk to about this as soon as I found out. You're right, I didn’t notice you looking miserable but I do believe you had some pretty good drugs keeping you smiling. I wish I would have asked Adam about a PT before he left. He works right in my area. How do you know if you have a good one? Jumped after 3 months huh? I thought you had said that. That puts me into October and if the weather stays nice…maaaybe. I can’t wait to be back at the DZ again…even if it does mean watching everyone else jump! BettyAnn Getting married? Check out my website!
BlueEyedMonster 0 #16 July 2, 2003 Quote Honestly...you;re screwed for the rest of the season. Maybe, but just this season. Last year my sister blew her knee out in a college volleyball game and had the surgery. 9 months later, she was playing professional VB in Germany. She had an excellent doc, who loved the sport. So that helps.
baa75 0 #17 July 2, 2003 Quote Be careful not to put too many pounds on while you're down...or else the suit wont fit Don't remind me! I think I've already gained about 5lbs just since I got hurt! I'm going to be depending on another DZ.commer to help me through the weekend. I won't reveal his name because I don't think he wants anyone to know that he's actually "nice". I do have a feeling I'm going to be living off candy bars though since I don't think he can cook! BettyAnn Getting married? Check out my website! baa75 0 #21 July 4, 2003 Surgery is done! Got there at 9:30 am and left at 3 pm...what a day! The people were great and totally understanding that I was shaking like a leaf from my nerves! Of course, I also had my sweetie there to hold my hand. I cringed through the IV being put in but once they added the sleepy stuff I was out. They gave me a spinal to numb from the waist down. They used a cadaver ligament to cut down on my healing time and save the strength of my other ligaments. I haven't seen it yet but I have a 1 inch incision that they worked through and 2 small holes. That's it! The next thing I knew I was waking up with a sore knee, my leg bandaged from mid thigh down and a high tech looking new brace. Granted, any movement makes it hurt like hell and the brace has to stay on, even to sleep. So far I'm taking the pain killers the minute I'm allowed but otherwise it wasn't so bad. Thanks so much everyone for keeping me from going totally nutz. Now just to make it the rest of the Summer without being able to jump! BettyAnn Getting married? Check out my website! freakyflygirl 0 #22 July 4, 2003 Congrats on making it through surgery and good luck on a speedy recovery!! Taking your PT seriously is really crucial to a good recovery.
