Help! I got all my gear ready.. stowed it in my car... go to start the car... rarararararara nothing... Did the basic check... fuel is good.. oil is good.. fluids are good... battery is good... power distribution fuses are good... no visible problems with the engine....

drove my 1995 jeep grand cherokee (6cyl) yesterday.. everything was running perfectly.. after a call to my dad and messing around another 45 minutes under the hood.. we determined that the spark plugs are not firing... tried to trace it as far back as we could... pretty much stopped at the starter coil.. which i suppose looks okay (but don't know if its actually firing). the starter motor is good.. the engine starts out as if its about to fire.. but never does... oil gauge in the car is indicating that the oil pressure is rising as the car is trying to start..

any ideas/ unfortunately, its not going to be easy to find a dealership shop open on the 4th of july.. and it looks like i am stuck here at home with my rig all ready to jump.. :(

HELP! Gimme some ideas that I can explore to see if I can get my car started and atleast get to the dropzone today..

Did you check the fuel filter(s) and fuel pump?

Not really.. my dad and I really do think it is an ignition only problem... plus.. I don't really know a good way to test the fuel system without tearing it apart..

doing a little google searching turned up the following
Quote

If you get the same result (no spark), the coil pack module, ignition module or crankshaft/camshaft sensor is bad. Further diagnosis will be required to isolate the faulty component. This may require "scanning" the computer with a plug-in scan tool to see if there are any ignition-related fault codes.

that does NOT sound good... i think we did as much as we could without taking it to a shop... i was just hoping that someone who knows cars well knows a quickfix or something... edited: not a QUICK fix.. a GOOD fix.. hehe.. this car has 102k miles on it.. only 1 problem so far.. and that could have been predicted by someone who knows about jeeps...

If there's no spark, it could be the crankshaft position sensor mounted
next to the flywheel on the driver's side. It's a $40-50 part that
takes 10-15 minutes to swap. This part commonly fails on 4.0L engines
once it gets over 100K miles on it. That reminds me that I should
replace mine now and carry the old one as a spare!

hrmm.. thats the kinda info i need.. anyone else have little hints like that?

Find a good rate on a rental car so you can still jump all weekend.

Hehe.. well.. maybe.. but I'm 21 and most car rental places have a min age of 25. That.. and I have to take care of my baby before the week starts. First thing tomorrow morning.. a wrecker :S is coming to take her to a dealership... I'm almost positive that it is a crankshaft position sensor. I tried to read the error code of the car (by reading the number of times the "check engine" light comes on.. but there are short pauses, medium pauses, and long pauses, and I am having a hard time figuring out when one code ends and the next begins.. I need a real computer scanner to plug my car into...

I guess i will spend the 4th of july alone.. :(

Well, it sounds like you've already identified the problem as no spark, but for future reference, you can easily check the fuel system by buying a can of spray starter fluid, removing an air intake hose leading to the injectors, shooting some starter fluid in there, and trying to start it. If it's a fuel delivery problem, the car should start right up, then die when all the starter fluid is expended... a couple of seconds max. Good luck!!!

I have a 94 4-cyl Wrangler that does the same thing. Mine seems to only happen when the weather is damp/rainy. It sometimes sputters, but once would not start at all for about 4 days. Once the weather dried out everything worked fine again. I am suspicious of a cracked distributer cap (or whatever the electronic equivalent is). Mine has new wires from last year.

Please PM me if you figure out what the problem is.

Not sure but...have you taken out a spark plug to see if you are getting fire???? With it wanting to start sounds like you might be gettin spark outta the plugs. Which makes me think it might be a timing problem...ie jumped time or timeing belt broke.first thing to check though is see if your gettin fire. On these newer rides it could be a million things

sorry im not much help but this could give you a place to start

hope this helps
