freekflyguy 0 #1 July 5, 2003 So Today I have been married for 11 years, and coz I am the perfect husband my wifes anniversary present is to go home to see her family and friends in England.(I am in the British Army in Germany and she really misses them) I am home alone, internet porn has lost its charm, as have chat rooms. The weather has been shit and I am both bored and lonely (what a pity my wife doesnt surf this forum). So I download some chooons. I download stuff from my formative years, Madness, The Jam, The Specials etc.... As I listen to what I have downloaded it strikes me that in 20 years music hasnt come that far. What would the youth of today think of "Pretty Vacant" "Anarchy in the UK" or "God Save The Queen" All of which were looked on with disgust by the British media, preceding Eminem et al by many years. "God Save The Queen" was the first No1 in the UK not to be named. Has anything simmilar happened in the US (serious question). These are songs which I feel do not deserve the ammount of pillaring they recieved. Far from it, they deserve to be celebrated for allowing freedom of thought and expresion in what is otherwise a very straightlaced country. I would love to her what our American cousins think of the UK music scene. Buzz Still thats what hapes when you post pissed. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. katiebear21 0 #2 July 5, 2003 Well, I'm afraid I can't offer anything intelligent on the topic of music but I thought I'd reply anyway! That was an incredible selfless gesture giving your wife this time with her family and friends on a date that is special for both of you. Very sweet! I have come a long way but still feel I'm pretty uneducated about a lot of things this world has to offer. My new British friends are careful to point out the differences between our cultures and the attitudes of Americans. Living in Kuwait and working with the coalition forces has been an incredible experience!Enjoy your evening and drink one for me! I won't be able to get good and pissed for another 4 months! SadSue 0 #9 July 5, 2003 Hi freak, What a great post!!!!!!!!!! America is not like the UK with the censory laws and I'm very sure that the blankety blank number one hit by the pistols, incident, has never happened here. What a great era for music tho. The Ramones, New york dolls, Patti smith, Richard Hell, Television, The dead boys, Iggy pop are all bands that invented punk, led the way for the Pistols and McClaren to drag punk to the UK. In the USA its cool to slag off the competitors by name on tv. (ie) washing powder or dog food or whatever. They just don't say" its 95% more effective then the ordainary brand here" lol. Hence this is the country of informercals. Then the Pistols happened, McClaren and westward and BANG They raged against the machine and turned normal Sun readers into REBELS with a cause. There impecible lyrics ring true to this day. My WINMX is shagged... where to get choons now I wonder. Hope you don't get Banned!
Squeak 17 #10 July 5, 2003 we must ba about the same age. and we are doing pretty much the same thing at present. Sex pistols was also the only nuiber one song to never get airplay here in Oz. back then our top 40 list was generated from 45 record sales and LP sales. The pistols shot to #1 without ever getting played on radio. They never toured here but I was fortunate to see PIL in the early 80's with a Freind of John Lydons who was staying in Sydney with me. I miss those days when PUB ROCK was king. All boy bands (and the female conterparts) should be lined up against the wall and uncermoniously shotYou are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?
QuickDraw 0 #11 July 5, 2003 Wasn't there a "bit of a commotion" about Ice-T and Cop Killer ? -- Hope you don't die. -- I'm fucking winning
SadSue 0 #12 July 5, 2003 uh yeah, Cop Killer was a song on the first Body COunt (Ice-T) album...that wasn;t censored by the government, it was pulled from the album bythe record label itselfafter it feared a backlash...or so they said. A lot of people at the time thought the label did it deliberately to generate controversy because NWA already had a song out called Fuck Tha Police that prmopted a warning letter from the FBI. Oh well, Bush's America! Hope you don't get Banned!
thethinker 0 #13 July 6, 2003 Ill have to agree this is quite an interesting post. I am not sure exactly however what you are asking or stating, so ill just state my opinion on UK, and US music. Of course there are similarities and also many differences. I will say that there are numerous numbers back then and today that are stilled played all over the US. Radiohead, my personal fave, is making a come back and many of their tunes are played on Mtv (the most popular music channel in the states), radio, and are popular for remake in techno. Cold play is another great band that is highly popular in the US. The smiths, The cult, the ramones, all are still played over here. They may not be as popular today as artists such as eminem, mainly because Rap has become so popular. However, many UK tunes I have found to be featured in video games. Skateboarding, Bmxing, and such....the uk pumps out great tunes. Many of the mixed Cds over hear contain numerous tracks of UK music. I enjoy it immensely. The sound is a bit more drawn out, but the lyrical content is a tad more real.
