FallinWoman 1 #1 July 5, 2003 I got this in an e-mail...thought I would share it with all of you! Subject: Mastectomy Legislation Please do this for yourself, for the people you love, and for the people who love you. =========== Subject: MASTECTOMY LEGISLATION Important info for all women. This is a time when our voices and choices should be heard. This takes about 30 seconds to vote on this issue. There's a bill called the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act which will require insurance companies to cover a minimum 48-hour hospital stay for patients undergoing a mastectomy. It's about eliminating the "drive-through mastectomy" where women are forced to go home hours after surgery against the wishes of their doctor, still groggy from anesthesia and sometimes with drainage tubes still attached. Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support. Last year over half the House signed on. PLEASE! Sign the petition by clicking on the web site below and help women with breast cancer get the care they need and deserve! There is no cost or monetary pledge involved. You need not give more than your name and zip code number. http://www.lifetimetv.com/reallife/bc/pledges/bc_mast_pledge.html THANKS Ami D. Parker, Esq. MikeTJumps 4 #4 July 6, 2003 I'll sign that. This in and out fast business is ridiculous. airann 1 #5 July 6, 2003 This is outrageous. GUYS go and VOTE, it could be your girlfriend, sister or Mother. It take only a second or two of your time. Insurance stipulations regarding major surgery like a Mastectomy is a blatant disregard for the patients well being. Not to mention the fact that any illness of any kind will, (hello? Cancer), increase the amount of time it takes for a person to heal. I might like to go home faster than another person, but not 48 to 72 hours. If it were my Mother I would raise hell like you have never seen. Medical Insurance policies continue to infuriate me. Luckily for my patients I know how to negociate extened stay for patients proper care as directed by their physicians orders. It can be done, yet this is another loop you have to jump through. In the advent of reduced spending via PPO's HMO's IPA's and etc, the phycians get paid less. The trickle down shows up in the staff. The majority of staff persons do not know the first thing about the science of the medical field, only how to fill out a HCFA form and the patient suffers again. If a precert person can not get extended care and accepts the Insurance minimal stay stipulations, then we are all screwed. Thank God I have never been exposed to a physican who would ever accept this limited stay thing as the rule. The physican says how long - not a policy. flyangel2 2 #9 July 6, 2003 QuoteOn April 30, 2003, Rep. Rosa DeLauro reintroduced the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act (H.R. 1886). I wonder when and if this will ever get passed. If my memory is correct, I first hear about his bill in 1997. I'm lucky, after my surgery my mother, who is a nurse, stayed with me at my home. She was allowed to take all the necessary medications home with me and administer them. Personally I wanted to be home, but having a private nurse helped.May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. airann 1 #12 July 7, 2003 QuoteShe was allowed to take all the necessary medications home with me and administer them. Personally I wanted to be home, but having a private nurse helped. This is what I wanted too. I wanted to be at home. Mainly, I wanted my mother there for the waiting part. After all preliminary testing I was sent to a thorasic friend of my doctor and he said surgery. With help again, I had a T-time with the cold surgical table the next morning. He also did plastic so my scar is only 4 inches. For me the test results wait was the worst part. As you can tell here, I dont like to wait. Everyone sign it.
