TheRus 0 #1 July 3, 2003 Ok gang, I leave in a few hours to head for New Orleans for the weekend and will do my 1st jump on Saturday. I wanted to give thanks first to all those who have encouraged me here on the boards and through PMs, emails, and IMs...Also, I'll be offline until prolly Sunday night so I wanted to say "Happy Birthday" to Viking since I won't get to on Saturday. I'll post pics when I get back - then you can all see what I look like now that the Dimebag look has gone away. Americans - have a safe holiday weekend! The rest of the world - have a safe weekend and try not to make fun us too much! Yeah, it's fine, we'll walk down the line. Leave our rain, a cold trade for warm sunshine You my friend, I will defend... and if we change, well, I love you anyway

PMS#28, Pelogrande Rodriguez#1074 My Pink M
 TheRus 0 #14 July 8, 2003 Ok, since I found out today that I am NOT going home until next weekend, I am gonna go on and post the story (such as it is) here and now.Yes, I DID jump. Carl was my TM and Scotty was my videographer. I went to the DZ with my mom, her boyfriend, my sister, and my son Logan. We went there on the 5th as planned but I couldn't jump due to the weather. I got to meet n2skdvn (Kreg) though and he let us use his camera to get a couple of shots of me and him together at the DZ as evidence and so I can have a decent avatar soon. Anyway, we drove the 90 miles back home without jumping but had set an appointment to jump on the 6th. Next day, we drove out and the weather was perfect! Got everything set up and met my TM. We went over everything that was gonna go down (no pun intended) and waited for the next load. While I was waiting I saw a chick with very curly hair pulled back in a pony-tail that I kept thinking looked familiar. Sure enough, it was Laurel. We started talking and when I introduced her to my family she and my mom shrieked each others' names - they work together on radio spots for the casino down here! Anyway, we finally get on the plane and this chick next to me asks if I'm the guy from Shreveport - turns out she was too! Same high school again and everything! I guess a bunch of us migrated down this way... Anyway, I kept getting the usual "screw-with-the-new-guy" treatment on the ride up. TM asleep behind me, folks asking if he took his medication b4 he boarded, all of them asking if they ever found his last tandem passenger's body parts, etc... I was in too much of a daze to really let them bother me though. Scotty kept saking me if I had anything to say for my video and for one of the few times in my life all I could do was look at him and say "No'... I was so focused on the view from the window that I couldn't think of anything to say! We got to 14K ft and they started to bail out. That was really the oddest part for me - seeing people suddenly just "disappear" out the door. Then we started towards the door and I got set... Ready-Set-Gone! I remember during the exit flip looking back up at the plane thinking "Wow, that's odd!" and then suddenly being aware that yes I was still breathing and that yes I was out in mid-air! It was unreal and honestly nothing like I expected (great, just not in any way I had anticipated). I tried to yell but couldn't hear myself so I stopped and just enjoyed the ride. I saw later on the video that I had the typical "dopey-permagrin" plastered on my face though... Anyway, free-fall was over WAY too fast and the canopy opening was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Carl had wisely advised me to "make sure the furniture was in the middle of the room" when we got the harness on, so no debilitating injurues... although I think I'll pass on wearing boxers next time just for speed's sake. He spun us around A LOT and showed me our shadow and the rainbow on a cloud nearby - right before we went through it... it was great! Now, I could be a badass and try to skip this next part but I swore not to do that so here ya go - I puked between 1,500 and 1,000 ft but none got on me or Carl so no harm done. I'e never felt better while puking in my life so it's all good. We landed a little off-target in a swampy area left over from the rains and the slip-n-slide the day b4 but I didn't care - it was unreal! Scotty came over to me and asked how I liked it and my exact words (on video so I can't dodge them) were: "Well, I'm alive and I only puked once so it must have been good!" Everyone there with me kept asking me what it was like and I kept having to tell them that no matter what I told them it would NOT do justice to the experience! I went back to manifest, got my 1st jump certificate, bought the surprise for a friend as promised, signed Carl's jump log, got my video and headed back home. In short (too late), I am hooked now. My son (age 6) is just dying to get to be a teenager so he can do it now. He has watched both me and his mom jump so he feel he must do it... I am hoping to be his TM when he hits his 16th birthday. I think I can get in 500 jumps in the next 9 and 1/2 years at least! I am planning to start AFF as soon as possible back home in AR at the new DZ that just opened and am already planning to be at the Mardi Gras Boogie down here next year. So that was it - I want to thank several folks while I am PWing here anyway... in no particular order: Laurel - for telling me about the DZ and making me feel welcome b4 I ever got close to the place. JT & Viking - for answering all my newbie questions in PMs and making me feel like one of the gang b4 I ever made the jump. hooked - for being a constant source of confidence in me and just "being there" in PMs when I had doubts n2skdvn - for approaching me when I got there on the 5th and making me feel welcome. Also for taking the time to have pictures made with me and showing me his rig and explaining what everything was and how it worked. Jumpergirl - for being in almost daily contact with me for the past month and just being a great friend in general... and for being the first person from DZ.com to ever call me on the phone. ...and to all the rest of you for tollerating a newbie in the meantime. Hope to see you all sometime in the near future - I see MANY road trips in the not-too-distant future! Yeah, it's fine, we'll walk down the line. Leave our rain, a cold trade for warm sunshine You my friend, I will defend... and if we change, well, I love you anyway
 hooked 0 #15 July 8, 2003 What a great write up of your experience!!!!
