The reason that they were unknown is because they tried to keep it that way. In order to keep from being noticed and getting their collective butts kicked by other Indians, they hid by day and travelled by night. The problem with travelling at night is that you spend a lot of time lost. So every morning, the Chief would climb to the top of the highest nearby hill and say "Where the foogawi now?".
