crapflinger2000 1 #51 July 12, 2003 For me at least, I would hesitate to leave MORE mental scars on myself by shooting some guy who was no longer posing a threat to my or my family's physical safety.... __________________________________________________ What would Vic Mackey do? TitaniumLegs 8 #53 July 12, 2003 Quote Well, considering that I'm assuming you don't associate with a lot of people who do carry guns, you're assumption is way off base. I regularly associate with people who carry and know a few who have cleared leather or actually shot at/killed someone. Not one wants to ever have to do that and those that have had to regret it for the rest of their lives (that they're luckily still around to enjoy). I don't think it's the people who carry for a living that he's worried about. At least, I'm not worried about them, mostly. They have armed cops, etc. in every civilized country. It's those whose only reason is "home defense" or "it's my right" or "ain't it cool" that I'm worried about. I talked to a guy at a DZ once who in all seriousness told me that he needed his collection of Armalites in case the Chinese Navy decided to drop off the Chinese Army on the beaches of Monterey Bay. Dude, if the US military can't stop them before they even get here (assuming the ChiComs could even get here with no resistance), I doubt a bunch of disorganized survivalists would be able to do much more than piss them off, if they even noticed. I think some people think "Red Dawn" could really happen. It's not that I don't think guns should be allowed. It's just too easy, and too careless. I think there needs to be training, background checks (more significant than there are now, even if we have to pay for them), and waiting periods. The training is probably the most important part. I own a SIG P228. I have the training. (I used to be an instructor.) I have the background check (required for immigration) and I waited before buying it. Why do I own a firearm? Recreational shooting. I skydive not because I'm likely to need to escape from a plane, but because it's fun. I shoot because it's fun, nto because I might need to defend myself, my home or my family. When not in use, the weapon is under multiple locks and not loaded. You can tell a lot about a shooter by the targets they shoot. Bottles, cans and exploding targets are fun. Round targets are for accuracy. Silouettes are for training to kill people. Those are the people who worry me. (>o|-< If you don't believe me, ask me.

TitaniumLegs 8 #55 July 12, 2003 Well, maybe not here, but certainly enough places. It used to be pretty easy here. And there is nothing to stop somebody from buying a weapon elsewhere and bringing it here. It's not like there's any kind of border control, except to ask you if you have any fruits and vegetables.
