Why do jumpers quit so soon?

Recommended Posts

Be it office politics, DZ politics, school politics, wherever... It always comes back to the same crap. People getting along for once, just cartblanche across the boards would be nice (I can dream right?)

FYI, your dream has pretty much come true. We all (almost at least) get along, and join forces in despising one single person. Mike Hawkes, owner of Skydive Las Vegas. How's that for getting along!

JT, we'll never know if SLV was kicked out, as he asked to have his DZ removed from the DZ list in Parachutist and on the USPA website a long time ago. He want's the insurance, without actually taking an experienced jumper up.

The USPA is sooo about money, there is no way they will kick out a group member, at least not for keeping jumpers out.

1. They see a serious accident.
2. They have an accident, or a close call and it scares them out of it. Some people jump a few more times, but the fear gets them.
3. Politics...Putting up with others BS.
4. They don't see a way to progress.
5. Dealing with know it alls. Drives them crazy.
6. Money issues.
7. Some just don't get it...Others just don't enjoy it.
8. Significant other wants them to quit.
9. It gets old after a while.

There are more.

Definitely....and there are many more.

We call it the '5-year plan'....Year after year you look around and know less and less people and more cheap gear!!!lol

And they add up to the fact that 1/2 of all USPA members have less than 250 jumps. People do leave the sport.

Yes, and I was not meaning to sound too gloom and doom, but there is that ever looming political sense.

I do feel that getting into this will be a good thing, and I will have a lot of fun. I also have, what seems so far ;), a good group of people here to learn from, and joke around with. I do think its good to get or give some occasional ribbing, etc... and I do agree that the most important thing is enjoy yourself and have fun.

anyhow... Back to the regularly scheduled thread!

oh, and united against a common enemy, that shuns fun/experienced jumpers sounds good to me

For me, doing skydiving "right" takes a fair amount of time. If you already have a full and interesting weekend life, it's just not worth the time you have to take away from your full and interesting life.

You can make the room, or have the room. But if neither of those happens, then you quit eventually, or you're the guy who comes out and makes 5 jumps a year.

I don't know about everyone who has quit the sport, but I can tell you how I feel about it. I am on a sort of hiatus right now. I had back problems last year summer, I only had two more things to do for my A license, and by the time the doctor and physical therapist ok'ed me to resume jumping it was in December. At that point my job was going bad, I was laid off in February of this year and am still looking for work. so right now I have not jumped since late May of 2002. I want to get back into it, as soon as I have a job, but I also realize that I am going to have to go back through a lot of training (I'm not sure exactly what yet). But I also realize that I will have to make the committment to go back out to the DZ everyweekend to do all the retraining, and many times money and schedules don't let that happen. Given the dangerous nature of this sport, you have to stay current to jump safely (as opposed to something like racquetball where you can just pick up any time you feel like it), and make the time and cash committment. This does make it tough to stay in the sport, because as exciting and scary as those first few jumps were, after awhile it can boring - maybe routine is a better description - if you don't make the effort to try new things and new types of jumps, and even then maybe it will get boring. It may be like all those guys out there buying Harleys, who have this image of themselves as bad ass bikers, but after awhile realize it's more work to ride correctly than they realized and not as exciting as they thought (maybe too exciting if they can't ride well), so they sell the Harley and the leathers after a year or two.
As for the politics, I've never jumped anywhere but Byron, here in the bay area in CA, and have not noticed any politics, but I also am not that emeshed in the daily goings on of Byron. Everyone at Byron has been very friendly and helpful.
Just my 2 cents on the subject.

After 8 years and 3300 jumps, I'm throwing in the towel, except for jumping w/ Skycat. Buying a new BASE canopy and going BASE jumping.

If I could do it over again, I would never have become an Instructor. There is no way to avoid DZ politics and instruct at a DZ.

Very new jumpers - fear, lack of fundage.
Newer experienced jumpers - lack of fundage, not taking the sport seriously, slow progression.

Perhaps the people that quit early are the ones that were in it for the wrong reasons. Not that I'm pretending to decide what the right reasons are, but it's a safe bet that if someone is skydiving only to impress a chick, that person won't skydive for long.

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

Hmm, maybe that's why I have NO desire to obtain any ratings?

You could always do what my buddy Jimbo (bozo on here) did. Drop the ratings. Become a fun jumper. In other words, come full circle, back to what attracted you in the first place. Worked for him, near death experiences and all. (JT knows who I'm talking about.)

Yep, I figure it's time to hang it up. Damn, I can't quit quite yet though, since I'm heading out there in September. Hey, how's about I quit after my visit out there?
