SHIT! Skydiver murder

Recommended Posts

Only just caught the last part of the news, will find out more.

Lincolnshire UK (i think). Experts say both the main and reserve had been tampered with in such a way that only an expert could have done it to disguise what they had done.

Police are launching a murder inquiry.

This is a VERY black day in Skydiving

Blue Skies to the innocent victim, friends and fammily. My thoughts and prayers are with you :(

I think thats pretty scary... I mean, most skydivers (myself included) leave their gear lying around at the dz... the worst thing that they think could happen is somebody could steal it. But now we have to worry about somebody intentionally trying to kill us?!?!??! :o

I really hope they catch the fucker who did it.

:| Rare but still sick as the murderer's mind that did it.

A DZ in Hawaii had fallen victim to a competitor by sabotage=lost student & Tandem Inst.:|

Can you follow this up with the details/sources? I know of the tandem fatality in dec (?) but had not heard of this. Is it another situation or this?
Note: when posting something like this in the future, you may want to include the source material because it sounds more like hearsay/rumor right now.

Thanx~~~

Yes i'm looking back for info/ wording of that nature. ~~I didn't say it was DEC.
I'll find & copy it when I obtain it.
The Dec incident brought up a referal printed to a prior occurence. Criminal activity suspected due to altercations between DZ's

Got "SKYDIVING" Jan. 2003?
My back issues are at work, I check at the DZ
I read the info somewhere, because I knew nothing about Hawaii & "all DZs @ same airport" in competition, was all new to me. I thought it was a big chain of Island Paradise until I read the article and statment of it.

There was a previous incident in Germany (perhaps one of the dz.commers there has more details?) a few years ago where a couple split up and the girl started dating someone else. The guy cut her reserve ripcord at a point which is inside the housing. On visual inspection, not obvious that the handle-end of the ripcord was not attached to the pin-end!

As far as I know, the guy is serving (or was serving) time for murder in jail.

I did a search for 'murder' here but found no reference to the story.

that seriously sucks. Why do people leave their rigs in a communal area at the DZ? Why not take it home with you at the end of the day? All that can result from leaving it at the DZ is theft, and now lets add sabotage to that list.

It was the collegiate nationals...so I guess they were all staying at the DZ that week...in tents.....etc.
A communal area (locked at night) would have been where they all left their rigs.....
I'd have put mine in there if it was me...without thinking about it :|

Because these are people who check our rigs on the flightline, people who we drink with in the bar and the people who we lend altis, gloves etc. If you get out with someone in freefall you should be able to trust them implicitly.

And if the person who sabotaged the rig is caught by skydivers before the police they will wish they hadn't been born.

Obviously I trust who I jump with, otherwise I wouldnt jump with them. But you can't be so naive to think that there arn't whack jobs roaming around out there, and that some of them very well may have discovered our beloved sport. Get real, people do fucked up things sometimes, keep your gear where it belongs, close and in sight to you. At least thats my beginner opinion :)

Yeah, that was 3 years ago. The murderer was sentenced to stay the rest of his life in prison some month ago.
Here's a link http://rhein-zeitung.de/on/99/06/23/topnews/fallschirm_mord.html, but it's in german.
This happened at Fallschirmsportclub Münster, where also a notorious german politician was member. He committed suicide while skydiving one month ago(see here http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=549041#549041)

Not very realistic though, most skydivers leave their kit at the dz if there's somewhere it can be left locked up. In fact I have left my own kit in the club room at the dz in question on multiple occasions. I guess I won't next time I jump there though.

You shouldn't have to worry about sabotage. Absolutely unbelievable that someone would do something like this. Condolences to his family and friends and everyone who works at Hib, who are undoubtedly having a tough time at the moment.

I absolutely agree. Its kinda fucked up that just this weekend I looked around the DZ and noticed random gear just laying all around, and I smiled that pretty much nowhere else people are as unguarded as that. I hope this isn't the changing tide. I love the closeness of this sport. Just watch out for eachother.

Yeah, after that it became common practice to tug on the reserve ripcord cable during the flightline check.
