WFFC 1 #3 July 18, 2003 Nothing on Maui. But, if you're a scuba diver, check out the crater on a night dive...

TitaniumLegs 8 #5 July 18, 2003 The three DZs are all on the Dillingham airport west of the famous North Shore of Oahu. There is nothing regular on Maui, although there have been groups doing jumps from time to time, usually out of the Hana airport. It's very irregular and I'm not sure how to get in on it. They were jumping one day back in December, the day we got to Maui, but we flew in around sunset and only found out because our puddle jumper pilot mentioned a NOTAM! Pacific Wings flies Grand Caravans - and we had our rigs. That was pretty tempting! Especially since we flew right over the house and golf course where we were staying. WFFC is right about the diving. There's lots of great diving. The Molokini crater dives run mostly out of Kihei. We did the Molokini night dive trip on our previous trip. Probably one of the most amazing dives I ever did. All kinds of fun critters come out at night like eels, squid, lobsters, crabs and dozens of sharks! (Mostly harmless like white tip reefs and gray reefs, but very cool.) If you're in Lahaina or Kaanapali or close by, Extended Horizons does some great excursions over to Lanai - Cathedral is a good one. They also do some night dives like right off Black Rock (the big lava mound at the north end of Whaler's Village/Kaanapali that all the kids jump off. Doesn't sound like much but it's a pretty good night dive. We saw a couple hundred squid, a couple dozen eels, some sleeping turtles and other neat stuff. If you happen to be in the West Maui area, have breakfast at least once at the Gazebo in Napili. For beaches, Kaanapali is nice but probably one of the most touristy, but also lots of stuff like boat rides, jet skis (out of whale season), kayaks, etc. Airport beach is also good, and less busy than Kaanapali. Fleming next to the Ritz Carlton / Kapalua is really nice. My favourite is Makena. You need a car to be able to cover all of this stuff. If you can afford it, a convertible is a lot of fun.
