Icons: Spacer foam, cordura or parapack?

Recommended Posts

I have an Icon on order, which has now been delayed due to the company that supplies the spacer foam. Basically it seems as though they haven't.

So I can either have my rig ready in time if I choose cordura or parapack, or wait till mid january and get spacer foam.

Given that this is the container I think I will have pretty much forever more, which is likely to be the best?

What plus points do cordura or parapack have over spacer foam?

Cheers.

Parapack/cordura will last longer, no doubts there, but spacer foam will be comfier - I think.

As it is a rig I will have forever, I want comfort first. If the spacer foam wears out, then I'll look to get it replaced.

Is this assertion correct:
Cordura - hard wearing, tough, will last a long time. But probably not overly comfy (by comparison).
Parapack - Softer to touch, won't last as long as cordura, but a bit more comfy.
Spacer foam - Softer, more airy, comfier, but probably the least durable.

In terms of comfort, the material itself isn't much of a consideration unless you mostly jump naked. It's a rare jump that you have less than two layers between you and your rig (jumpsuit + shirt/shorts), so the 'feel' of the material isn't a big factor.

It's really a personal choice. Are you able to jump the rig within the next month? If not, you might as well let it sit there and have it built as ordered. If you have a trip planned or local jumping available, screw the spacer foam, get the rig and spend your foam money on more jumps.

Forever is a long time.

Cordura is a great H/C material
Spacer Foam is worth the wait.

Wouldn't you have rather waited 6 weeks to have something you wanted forever; than to get something less that you were impatient about and be disappointed - forever? ;)

Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Well I've been heavily leaning towards waiting and getting the spacer foam since I got the email from Aerodyne, I just posted this thread to reinforce that it was the right thing to do!! And to confirm that spacer foam was the thing I wanted given my priorities.

I think this has done that.

I have a complete rig I can jump on any jumps over x-mas and january, so wait it is.

Cheers.

I needed to know people's opinions urgently so I could let Aerodyne know what my choice was asap.

If I changed to cordura or parapack then the rig might just have been ready in time to get it shipped to the person who I had it being shipped to. Literally with 1 or 2 days to spare before they left the country. So I couldn't really delay in getting my decision made.

Now that I have made it and gone for spacer foam, it is no longer urgent as it will miss the departure date of the person by over a month! So have to sort out a different delivery address.

Will edit the title (if I can) to reflect that it is no longer urgent.

Roger that. Delivery times on rigs are highly erratic, and I would never want to cut things that close on an order.

Hi degen,

That would be Gehring Textiles; and having dealt with them, IMO they are a strange company. :S

I think that they would much prefer to sell in 10,000 yard quantities only; not going to happen in this industry.

Well, as long as Aerodyne get the stuff and I get the container without too much of a delay, it will still be worth it.

This is just going to build more anticipation and excitement!!

As to what to pick I don't have a rig with spacer foam and probably wouldn't choose it unless doing a lot of jumping in the U.S. south. I prefer parapak for the back pad since it slides easier.

As to any of the them wearing out. I don't believe I've ever seen a back pad wear out on any rig, jumper or pilot. I've seen some labels wear out but not the pad itself. This includes a rig where the three ring main rings had worn thinner significantly.

Unless your packing on sidewalk concrete I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if you use a drag mat. Hmm, I've actually seen the front of the harness damaged more than the back pad because of dragging.

I have seen para-pack back-pads with holes worn in them.
The first was an early Javelin that did some jumps in California, but retired to the Wet ... er ... Northwest Coast.
The second was a Reflex that made a million jumps in the Arizona desert.
I believe that most of the damage was caused by dragging them across a dusty packing mat.
