Xenophobia

Yeah, no shit, its in YOUR thread.

Well yes, but only as it was repeated from another Tlak Back thread! But at least we are in agreement on one thing - that there are xenophobic posts being made.

How about next time you want to quote me, use the entire quote, instead of trying to pull little pieces out so you could try to prove your point.

Because the rest of the quote wasn't relevant to the point I was making, and anyone reading the thread could quite easily read your post as it was just above mine. Sorry, I really didn't think this was an issue.

In the context of this thread, it strikes me as ironic that one reason some people have some ill will towards France is that it is markedly xenophobic itself. Hmmm.

I haven't read the other thread being referenced, so perhaps I'm just repeating someone else's observation, I don't know.

Bullshit!

Especially since I didn't post in the "French" thread. Go look up my posts by my username and find where I said that in a previous post. Post the link, prove me wrong. I know you won't because you can't. I stated what I stated by my beliefs.

As for misrepresenting quotes not being an issue? Use your head man, of course it is an issue, since you were taking MY words and manipulating them to make it sound like I said something I didn't!

When the media does that, that's how lawsuits are made!

All I'm saying is that, for me and perhaps many others, this isn't an issue of Xenophobia. But still, you have a point and many of us have been insensitive to the feelings of others.

Yea, whether or not anyone consider it xenophobia isn't really what I personally care about. I just hope that the forums could be a better place, and that everyone can be happy here irrespective of where they live.

I've seen hate of other people in real life, and I've lost a relative because of it. Seeing it, whether intentional or not, always hurts.

For it to be Xenophobic, we'd have to say "we hate french people because their french people."

I've seen those sentiments posted today in Talk Back.

Well I've said that the french people I have ever had to opporunity to meet were just asses. I don't hate them because they are foreign, I dislike them because they are asses. That's not xenophobia. Show me some nice french people, and I'll probably change my attitude.

Yeah, I was, until you pieced out and quoted me wrong to prove your point...

(yes, I know I just did the same thing to him, that is on purpose, I'm proving a point to him).

How freaking closed minded is that man... if that not the hypocrite's definition of racism, I dont know what is.....

I can unfortunately relate. I have tried desperatly not to be "judgemental" and in general I'm really not, but when you have several bad experiences with someone from a different place, of a different race, religion, whatever, and have NEVER had a good experience with someone of that race, religion, etc., you get labeled as a racist. I have gone out of my way several times, to try to have a good experience with those groups of people but I have not be successful.

p.s. and its not the "minority" group most are thinking of.
Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Sentiments change. During WWII, Germany was unpopular, remember?

Countries act in their own interests. That interest is economic. During WWI and WWII, it was in everyones interest to be on the same side. France was the buddy of the US.

France made a boatload of money with Iraq. I understand why they didn't want to offend the money tree. The same happened with Libya previously. At the bottom, it is about business. US oil and French oil companies.

People make jokes about the French, blondes, rednecks, etc. They are just jokes.

People can get too serious about politics, but this is an open forum and sometimes things get heated on every topic. Politics is just another one.

Its not racism dude, its personal experience. You think I should have a rosy attitude toward the french when the only french people I have ever met trampled over my polite overtures to make known they were complete asses? I have not formed this opinion on a single experience, but on several.

It has nothing to do with race. Thats like calling me homophobic. Its the attitude that "Your a savage sub-human if you don't speak French." Even if you are in small-town, rural US. I'm nice to strangers, I expect the same in return. I've received nice in return from all the foreign tourists I've met. Europeans in general are the nicest people I have ever met. The BIG exception--every single french speaking tourist I have ever met.

Basing my outlook on a few bad apples? Maybe. That's why I say, show me some nice french people and I will change my attitude.
Edit to add: If I was racist I wouldn't care if you showed me a nice french person.

Oh c'mon people...can we all just....get along???!!!

NO! cuz then it wouldnt be life... it would be "super happy crazy fun time". but i too would like to think that we should.

feeling this applies to this thread... i have been to germay, switzerland, austraila, venezuela, and for 5min france. I had wonderful times in all these places but 2 were WAY up there on the bad experience list. My most recent trip (returned yesterday) i actually defended comments some tourists were making about the locals b/c I felt them racist/xenophobic. but then after 10 days there I had to do my best to not feel the same as those opinions I was just arguing w/ days before.

some of us can, from experience, hold opinions that are not pleasant. but thats what it is: opinion. I will not try to get anyone to belive what i do is true, its just how I feel. and I hope that if I encounter those people again, I can w/ a good heart, attempt to not let the past influence the future...
Malev: i belive that the majority of these good people here feel the same way.

but then again... maybe im just spewing crap? B|

For it to be Xenophobic, we'd have to say "we hate french people because their french people." When what's really going on is as a nation we're disgusted with their government and leadership.

Substitute American for French and I'll agree with you whole-heartedly.
