Cheapest place to buy a new canopy

Recommended Posts

I am preparing to buy a new custom main canopy. Since I know exactly what I want, I am looking for the "best deal". I know dealers won't generally discuss what discounts they give publicly (nor would I ask dz.commers to) so I'm just asking for ideas on who to call for the cheapo deal.

Private messages are fine.

Thanks!

I'd call Ralph, he has looked after me and quite a few other OZ jumpers very well.

Since practically every thread that asks about gear gets your Jumpshack promo reply, it's fairly obvious you are really happy with their product. Which begs the question(s) - Why does your profile list :

Reserve: Raven Dash-M 150 ft² (1.20 lbs/ft²)

are Angelfire reserves not good enough for you ?

There's a guy in Australia (Gary?) who apparently has real cheapo deals. You may have trouble getting a hold of him (in hiding, or something), but from what's been posted here, he has the very lowest prices. :)
And the deal is easy and trouble free: you just send him the money, and forget about it!

Support your local dealer. It's best for skydiving and your home dz overall.

Really? How is supporting my local dealer any better than supporting someone else's local dealer?

well if you don't support your local dealer , you might not have one for long... and need to go looking further away...

for the best price, depends on the brand

Dude, you're still living in Mayberry.

In case you haven't noticed, I'm looking further away already - and getting loads of replies.

And I do support my local dealer. All he needs to do is earn my business with the best price.;)

Or a decent price and great service, a few dollars are of no concern to me if the service is there.

local riggers reply to my question when he could pack my reserve: "4 weeks, maybe!"

rigger 2hrs away, me (pretty much every time i need him) "dude, can i bring my rig tomorrow, and uhm, could you like pack it straight away!?" him: "no probs mate, just gimme a couple hours, i promise you can still make a load or two that day!".

which would you bring your buisness to!?

I too have great loyalties to my local resources that provide service. In this case I am buying a new canopy that will require zero local resources or local service.

What advantage would buying local give me? Having my dealer box it up to send it back to the factory if there's a problem rather than doing it myself?

Please.

You would say my local dealer deserves my business because of the helpful service he provides in other areas, and I would agree with you - in those other areas.

If you've NEVER ordered something online, choosing a local retailer EVERY TIME instead, even though the product would cost more and you had to pay sales tax, then you have a valid argument here. Otherwise you are talking out of both sides of your mouth.

You may not like my calling out the double standard of the "buy local" argument, but it is what it.

As I said before, I will gladly buy local, assuming the local guy gives me the best price on the very same product that every other dealer sells.

and the same guy is 10 bucks cheaper, too! ;)

Do the pack jobs from the guy with the waiting list open, while the other guys don't?:o:D:D

if you'te too busy doing other stuff and give a shit about your customers, so be it.

if you're busy with other stuff, but actually do provide service, well, i'll gladly take the drive! :)

having bought my rig "online", having taken all measurements myself and got a bit of assistance from the mfgr's.. i saved something in the area of 2 or 3 grand. that includes phonecalls, taxes and everything. over there that's worth how many jumps, something like 100!?

oh, and i enjoyed the opportunity to learn a bit about gear. i even hooked up my main myself!

besides the money saving, great experience all around! :)

I went crazy with a spread sheet.

I sat down and figured out exactly what I wanted

I sent an email/requested via phone for a quote for said items.

plugged the various numbers in my spreadsheet, added pros/cons to the lists.
This process made it easier to make the decision.

searching the forums here will verify that the choices I have made were the right ones..
Rigs N Things and Chuting Star have proven to me to be top notch, go-to places. Most places have great customer service, some have even better prices.

I bought a new canopy earlier this year and didn't really see much of a difference in price between the different dealers. How much difference are you seeing so far?

I went with John Storrie. You should check with him. If you don't have his contact information let me know and I will PM it to you.

When I got the Raven Dash-M the Angelfire had not been developed. Thank you for helping http://jumpshack.com/

If the canopy you're looking at is a PD, don't they have MAP? I've heard every dealer is supposed to sell at the same cost. If you hear different (dealer's name) please pass that along Chuck. Thanks!

Also for the local shop, if they will not even call you back after an hour discussion about buying specific gear (and two reminder emails), I'm not going to beg someone to take my money.... :-)

That's really awesome of you, and I'm sure your local dealer appreciates you being willing to do that for him.

But I'm wondering why you even want to pay at all. I mean, you have 5000 jumps, you must be a really good skydiver. With a little effort, you could get a new canopy for 50% off or maybe even free. Worked for me for both a main and a container, and I'm far from a really good skydiver.

Sorry, bytch. I'm way beyond any more futile conversations with anonymous, sarcastic wannabes. Butch up and back your words with identity or don't bother.

I just hope you're single. I'd hate to think there's a guy or gal out there putting up with your sh*t on a daily basis.
