who has the authority? anyone, everyone every moment makes decisions about who to help and who not to, who to save and who to let drown. Anyones right to live is sacred, until it becomes a choice between one life or another..then the true 'value' of those lives is exposed in sharp relief.

...

the 'value' of any particular life is relative to the observer and the circumstances. pun intended

We are placing a judgment on the worth of another life. Their relative worth or worthlessness is not inherent. So I am highly mistrustful of rhetoric of good vs. evil, and especially rhetoric that claims our right to murder others because we are "good" and they are "evil" as though these terms were concretely defined. They are not.

So, you don't believe in self defense. I take it that never you will have to defend yourself under those circumstances, well, Hope you break the bubble sometime soon. we live in a very dangerous world, there are many people who are about hurting/killing others. If a policeman decides to shoot someone who is a car theft, after a car chase of a few miles, exposing others, and gets out pointing out a misterous object, then there is no reason to be worried there? I would say at this point the police is not even thinking, "Oh, let me value the life of this person...."

Lets shoot a leg, don't mind stopping him.

Wake up man, and face life, your world certainly sound nice, but it is not real nor accesible

I doubt it. I'd defend myself against someone trying to kill me, even if their life were more worthy than mine in some ways (e.g. supporting 6 children and an aged mother, etc). What he's saying is that we can't judge the inherent worth of a person. And cold-blooded killing, even in the name of the state, is judging the inherent worth.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
