Serial Numbers

Recommended Posts

My sky season is coming to an end here in the Midwest and I'm preparing my gear for winter storage. Something I should've done a long time ago is get a list of all my serial numbers for my gear. I have the container, reserve, AAD numbers somewhere but I want to get a good list together and have them all in one place. My problem is my main's label is totally worn off. It's an older PD Silhouette and I'm awaiting PD's reply on if they put their SN on any of the ribs or anywhere besides the label.

My question is does it make sense to create my own SN if I can't find the original? If something happens to it, I want to have something else to go by other than "Well, its a big rainbow piece of material". Suggestions?

In the case of theft, there is the ability to enter an owner applied number into NCIC. Or you can even simply tell the reporting officer that the number that you applied acts as a serial number due to the absence of a proper number.

As to how to apply that number, well, a common location, such as the data panel would the be best place. However, I'll leave the actual application there in to you, the rigger and the manufacture.

The canopy is yours, mark it in any way you please. Keep in mind that any canopy that has had enough use that the label is "totally worn off" isn't likely to be worth big bucks.

You're right, I bought the canopy for a few hundo. But in perspective of a college student like myself, that's a lot of money to lose....

I do not know exactly when PD started laser etching S/N numbers into a rib in each canopy, but it has been a few years back.
So, hopefully if you look at each rib maybe you will find something there.

Just about all of the manufacturers do this in some fashion now BTW.
