lawrocket 3 #1 July 28, 2003 You know, I really have gotten to the point where I just can't stand most American theatrical releases. Especially those with big budgets. Maybe that's why I don't go to movies much anymore. Problem: No interesting story to tell. Reaction: bulk it up with explosions. Problem: Bad guy is too bad ass. He can karate kick a mole off of the inside of my nostril without touching my lip. Reaction: make it so he couldn't hit an aircraft carrier with a machine gun. Problem: It's too tough to market a movie. Reaction: Make movie that's easy to market, i.e "Boy meets girl, girl gets boy into pickle, boy gets pickle into girl. The end." Look what the big studios did to Insomnia. Watch the original, even if it requires reading subtitles. A great example of this problem. Who knows a good movie that I can watch that has some actual dialog and storytelling, instead of explosions and supernatural feats of endurance? If it's in the theaters now, I may see it. p.s. this does not apply to animated releases. I gotta see "Finding Nemo." My wife is hotter than your wife. txblondie 0 #2 July 28, 2003 Well, I'm probably not the best judge for you because I have a collection of nearly 1000 movies myself...obviously, that means I like all kinds of movies. And of the movies I've seen in the theatre lately, I've really liked them. However, the last movie that I absolutely LOVED was The Two Towers, which comes out on DVD in a month anyway. However, if for some reason you haven't seen it, I would still suggest seeing it in the theatre. Didn't see the first one? Must rent the EXTENDED version first. Why do I recommend these? Yes, there are action scenes, and it's a big-budget movie, which is not what you're looking for, but they follow as closely to the books as I think a movie can, which means that there is good, meaningful dialogue, and not every scene is filled with action so that your senses are overloaded. ***************************************** Blondes do have more fun! Go see 'city of god', if you can find it, it's quite violent, funny in places, excellent movie overall. It's about gangs somewhere in Brazil, San Paulo or Rio, can't remember which. -Ben
Scoby 0 #4 July 29, 2003 Go watch Dirty Pretty Things. It is about the lives of illegal immigrants in London. The only actor you might recognize is Audrey Tatou. I really enjoyed it. It was easily the best film I've seen this summer (granted, I've seen a bunch of stinkers).
