Further proof that the current administration is a bunch of asshats. it has nothing to do with the administration. its a DARPA project, and dispite the distasteful nature, it could have been a great analytical tool. you'll never do anything great if you dont think outside the lines..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. lawrocket 3 #12 July 29, 2003 Actually, if you thnk about it, it might be a great tool. Imagine seeing a bunch of people suddenly wagering that there will be, for example, a declaration of war by France. We could immediately laugh! Then again, if there was a wager that there would be a mahine gun and attack at the Athens airport during the Olympics, we could see who was making these bets and investigate them. If they came from a common geographic area, we would have greater idea. It's an interesting idea, but it just seems a little too revolting. We should have learned by now that reality often is revolting. My wife is hotter than your wife.
Zenister 0 #13 July 29, 2003 actually youve got it a bit backwards. you dont investigate the people 'betting' (and its not betting in the traditional sense) because they do so 'anonymously, but you would get a early warning because those 'investors' could possiblyhave insider information that they would never share otherwise... it was an idea with alot of potential unfortunately its highly distasteful and the shortsighted politicians used it as a publicity lever without any real understanding of the concept.____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Zenister 0 #15 July 29, 2003 go do some research into futures markets and their accuracy at predicting trends vs other means. Its a method of collecting information that is not available otherwise, as there is no incentive to provide it. your not looking at it from a wholistic perspective.____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. livendive 8 #16 July 29, 2003 QuoteIf I know that if I bet on a terrorist act occuring the government will prevent it, why am I betting? Zenister 0 #19 July 29, 2003 the administration does not directly supervise DARPA they just approve funding. PhillyKev 0 #21 July 29, 2003 Quotenow go do some real research and tell me how often the futures market has made correct forecasts. You made the claim...back it up. Here's my research...these 3 people that I work for who manage over 10 billion in assets and say that is a load of bull. People point out the times it was accurate and ignore all the times it is not. Kind of like psychics making 100 prediction, and since 1 came true they claim they have a gift.
Zenister 0 #22 July 29, 2003 i made the claim that its a good analytical tool. any tool can be used well or badly. So if the government started spending two billion a year giving out chocolate bars to convicted sex offenders under the premise that chocolate makes people happy and happy people don't commit rape, would I have to propose an alternate therapy solution for reforming sex offenders before I could say the chocolate idea is stupid. Quote Here is my proposed solution: Pull your heads out of your asses and try using your fucking brain matter for something other than bringing people down to your level! There is substantial benefit to questioning and/or discrediting theories, even in the absence of better theories. Additionally, most politicians couldn't possibly move "down" to my level, rather they'd have to climb several floors. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!"
