padawonMonkey 0 #1 July 29, 2003 I recently found out that after a six month visit at home (USA) I will once again go over sea's and fight our nations war. Last time Afghanistan held the battle; this time Iraq. Obviously I can't pick up everything that makes home home and take it over there as space is very limited. As I try to narrow down those things most important to me I found myself wondering what others might consider important enough to them. If I had my way I would pack a twin otter up in my ruck sack and drive on...-------------------------------------------------- "But I'm Just doin what I have to do to survive"-MM
QuickDraw 0 #2 July 29, 2003 How about a PDA ? upload some tunes and favorite photos and write up your logbook as backup. -- Hope you don't die. -- I'm fucking winning
quade 4 #3 July 29, 2003 Tricky. The unfortunate facts of travel are that if you take it, you have to carry it. Totally sucks. I'd take; Personal GPS unit like maybe the new GEKO 301 (Call me stupid, but not lost -- never.) Rechargable batteries for same Solar charger BayGen short wave radio 6 baseballs -- 3 to juggle, 3 to barter Harmonica Blank journalquade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
padawonMonkey 0 #4 July 29, 2003 Some good choices, I like the PDA idea; pictures and music are a definate must have. As for the GPS I have a garman Summit. Getting lost is like going low. padawonMonkey 0 #9 July 29, 2003 I'm sure if I get Chuck drunk enough I could convince him to crawl into a duffle bag. I'd just put his SF3 in the bottom of it along with a case of Coors light. Although when he came to in Iraq he probably wouldn't be a happy monkey.-------------------------------------------------- "But I'm Just doin what I have to do to survive"-MM
katiebear21 0 #10 July 29, 2003 I'm getting ready to pack myself up to go home to Chuck for just a few days! Young Padawon... a few tips: - laundry's still tricky... bring lots of t-shirts, underwear of your choice, and do it yourself laundry tabs - definitely an mp3 player or some form of entertainment - pack a few vids/dvd's; most of the units have purchased vcr's and dvd players and set up some type of mwr tent - no need for stamps - gatorade mix cuz water gets old fast - swim trunks cuz lots of the palace pools are open for swimming - 2 sets of pants/collared shirts; if you get R&R you need to be dressed right - lots of workout clothes; most units are still PT's only on their off time but that all depends on where you are - there's always tons of free books to pick up so I wouldn't worry about that - mosquito repellant, lotion - a small fan - mini mag light, batteries - they've set up a few PX's up north so personal hygiene stuff is not really an issue Hope that helps. You won't have much access to NIPR but if you get bored there's always AKO-SIPR chat. Let me know when you're coming! Peace! padawonMonkey 0 #11 July 29, 2003 Thanks Katie. The more I know about what I am getting into the easier the move will be. I just found out that the first elements of my until will be moving very soon. So I am quickly trying to get every square inch out of my duffels...-------------------------------------------------- "But I'm Just doin what I have to do to survive"-MM
katiebear21 0 #12 July 30, 2003 I'm hearing 6 months for you guys... that's not too bad. The other units rotating will be looking at 9 months to a year! 101st is feeling the same pain that you are. First Ghani, now Iraq. Those guys are banking though! Katie Get your PMS glass necklace here
padawonMonkey 0 #13 July 30, 2003 That deffinatly makes is better...im thinking a bike and a second rig sounds good after this one...as long as I don't spend a grand+ at the PX buying junk food and cds like last time...-------------------------------------------------- "But I'm Just doin what I have to do to survive"-MM
