ChasingBlueSky 0 #1 July 28, 2003 My rig was officially grounded this weekend due to the Javelin SB. I had a DOM94 former student rig as my sport rig....and after my rigger looked it over, it turned out that it wasn't safe to go back in the air. Betzilla at ParaConepts chased me down to make sure I was safe and wouldn't jump it without having it checked out. Thanks for looking out for me Betsy!!! I will still get you some beer, it may not be a true save, but I look at it as one! HeatherB, Jerm, and Sunshine made a bunch of calls trying to find me a rig that I could jump at Rantoul this weekend - all three of them combined found me a bunch of options....I was working all weekend and had no time to make a phone call or check the internet and they did all the hard work for me. I was shocked with how many options I had by the time they were finished! You three are great friends! Thanks!!! Luckily I found a great guy at the DZ this morning that was willing to sell me a rig on a payment plan and allow me to take it with me to the convention. Thanks Jeff!!!!! Malfunction 0 #2 July 28, 2003 Rock On! Glad you had your rig checked. This is living proof that skydivers are a close-nit group of people and no matter the distance, they are still family.. have fun at the convention... I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

DZ.commers rock. those of you who think otherwise can just kiss my lily white ass! See you at Rantoul CBS. Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money. Good that you got another one, but could you let me know what the reasons were for the rig being grounded? My 93 Jav is in great shape, but would have been grounded if I didn't get the service bulletin done. Was it wear and tear or ???It's your life, live it! bbarnhouse 0 #8 July 30, 2003 Make room for one more! I took one of my rigs in for repack and it was grounded too! It was purchased new and only had a little over 1400 jumps on it. Fortunately for me, the harness is being replaced and will be ready for Rantoul. *just a small reminder to packers...please don't drag rigs toward you when stowing lines. It causes wear on the lift web.

sunshine 2 #10 July 30, 2003 It's actually kinda sad. Bo looked so pretty with that hot pink pop top on his old javelin. I hope his new rig has some pink too!!! ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!
ChasingBlueSky 0 #11 July 30, 2003 QuoteIt affected Javelins with an ajustable harness. Bo had an old SDC student rig. Exactly, it was a student rig with a B yoke, and an adjustable main lift web (DOM3/94). Most people do not have them on their rigs, but there are a few floating around. If allowed you to change the length of the harness - much like a tandem harness. Unfortunetly, we lost a jumper in Miami when his MLW snapped on deployment - he had an adustable harness, and it appears this was the breaking point. After looking at my own rig, it appears that the hardware (much like the hardware on you leg straps) was causing significant wear on the webbing. The wear appears to be starting on the edge of the webbing and working its way in towards the center of the strap. The webbing was worn, the yellow thread was gone in a few places and you were able to see some green thread (?) in it as well. The master rigger/owner of Para Concepts Kirk Smith feels that it would not have broken on my next jump, or maybe the next few jumps, but it is very possible it would have in time - no one is sure just how much time that would have been, and he grounded the rig instantly (which Sunpath agreed with). Sunpath will be getting my rig to look at. A couple people asked me why I never noticed this on a gear check, esp those that know me as very annoying safety person. Several years ago I had a Sabre 230 as my main and the terrible openings it would give me would cause the lift web to slip upon deployment. I had a rigger tack it down so this wouldn't happen anymore. All of the wear happened underneath the webbing, out of site of a gear check. It is possible that tacking down the liftweb may have caused more damage than normal since the webbing could never move - thus forcing the hardware to cut into the same exactly place everytime. Needless to say the thougt of, what if I had been making a ton of more jumps, or done a Mr. Bill has crossed my mind a few times. I guess being unemployed and not jumping as much this summer turned out to be a good thing. The two nightmares I tend to have about skydiving (re:bounce dreams) deal with horeshoes and my harness breaking. **cold shivers**_________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
