SW Air and rig

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Just wondering outside of the AAD card, USPA license if there is any "just in case" documentation a friend of mine should bring with on a Southwest Airlines Flight into Chicago?

I called SWA and the chick on the phone didn't know jack. She told me to call the local baggage office. They knew less jack. I searched the forums (thanks, Sangiro!) and found out that USPA has letters from the major carriers that specifically allows rigs to be carried on. If you ask, they'll fax or mail a copy of the letter to you. (thanks, USPA!)

I've made 4 round trip flights with SW carrying my rig on, and have never had a problem with them. In fact, I carry it on in my gear bag, and they've never even once asked what was in it. It's my version of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. I think they only care if the bag fits in the overhead compartment and they probably depend on the TSA to check over the contents.

Southwest has a policy on rigs and Cypres published in their OPS manual under Baggage. I have posted it here several times. Reservations doesn't know about it cause it's in a different computer data base. You can obtain a copy of it from a ticket counter superviser if you like.

Here's what it says. Baggage-Parachutes- Parachutes equipped with the Cypres Automatic Activation System-AAD are classified as an unregulated item by the US DOT. Therefore Parachutes equipped with the Cypress Automatic Activation system are authorized to be carried as either checked or carryon baggage by our customers.

Flown with my rig on SWA lots o' times. Haven't had a problem with the airline.

There's no telling what the clueless TSA 's will do on any given day in a given location, but Chicago-Midway was pretty laid-back when I went through there twice last year on two separate trips.

Ah, then you haven't been in Chicago lately. The Mayor is on a rampage about the TSA right now. Delays out of Midway airport are out of control, all on the security side, not at the gates. Daley is asking for a whole lot of info on the TSA that they do not want to give up. Interesting that when some local alderman were asking for the same info on the Chicago Police Department Beat procedures, Daley balked.
