Austrian flies the length of the English Channel

Recommended Posts

with a carbon fiber wing, cool footage. Camera flyer passed out at altitude 30,000', no O2 the flight was cool as hell looking.

Accelerate hard to get them looking, then slam on the fronts and rollright beside the car, hanging the back wheel at eye level for a few seconds. Guaranteed reaction- Dave Sonsky

Don't know, but I'm comfortable in saying that it looked like Red Bull may have sponsored the event.

I think a more appropriate question would be, how big are both of his left feet? He face-planted the landing.

However, the wing was reported as having a 1.8 meters wingspan or about 6 feet. The parachute was difficult to judge, but I'd say it was fairly largish, but that could put it anywhere from say 150 to 200 square feet.

Yeah, from the skycam it looked like he whacked hard w/o flare, ground cameras show it from a better perspective, I do wonder how his knees feel after that.

14 minute flite, 6' carbon fiber wing, nothing about the chute

"Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it..."
"No, actually, it's Felix Baumgartner."
"Oh."

____________
Mr Baumgartner had prepared for three years for this flight, with rigorous training including strapping himself on to the top of a speeding Porsche.

Did the driver know ?

"What Officer, a man strapped to the roof of the car as we went down the AutoBahn ?"
"Yes sir"
"I don't belive you, why isn't he there now"
"He dropped off over the bridge and glided over the river"
"Have you been drinking officer ?"

Blow into the bag son, blow into the bag.

I think he had a 'SKYRAY' didn't he. Like a wings suit type thingy! Have seen footage on the web. Anybody tried one? How much do they cost?

According to the Skyray people, it's not actually one of theirs -- just an awful lot like it.

Can't that be grounds for a lawsuit, especially since this is such a "historic day in the history of flight?":S

Would depend on their patent and their attorney -- and of course how big of a issue they'd want to make of it.

As it stands, they'd probably sell more Skyrays if they let people believe Felix had one of theirs.

Then again, if Felix decided that this was a venture he wanted to get into and started selling "his" design, I'm almost certain the Skyray people would at least attempt to put a stop to it.

The original skyray is not that big, and a skydiver wearing one on his back can easely fit into a medium sized jumpplane.

The gliderplane Felix was hanging underneath almost didn't fit through the door of a skyvan.
Unless you always want to pay for 3 slots in a skyvan, there's not much practical use for that me thinks...

right, question time from the confused brit...

Adrian nicholas who held the world record for longest time in free fall...

does felix now hold it? or does the giant wing on his back disqualify from it??

i know adrian was wearing a wingsuit, but it's slightly different to a big old wing on the back.

anyone any idea?
