Rantoul Memories...

Recommended Posts

Well, I got in last night after a great week at Rantoul. After some serious recovery and rest time, and a new liver, I thought I would write some of the more memorable events of the convention...

First, it was great to see all my old friends again. FallinWoman, SkyMedic, Jceman & TLML, Freaksis, SkyBytch, LewMonst, SkymonkeyONE, Phree, Sunny, Brits17, OmriMon, MonkeyLip, Vallerina, Scotty & Tami Carbone, and others. The WFFC is called "The Family Reunion" for damn good reason.

I also made some great new friends: Sangiro, ChileRellano, LadySkyDiver, Betsy, AirMail, LouDiamond, SkyRose7, ClownBurner, DiverDriver, ChasingBlueSky, HeatherB, Da'Gimp, SkyDekker, HappyThoughts, Jerm, Karen, and a lot of others.

The first dive I got suckered into while I was there was a jump with an inflateable alligator. The plan was for Sunny & HeatherB to ride it with ChasingBlueSky, ClownBurner, AirMail, SkyDekker, me, and a couple of others holding on with Da' Gimp on video. Well, let's just say that the dive didn't go as planned. In fact, it was a human blender and I think just about everyone on the dive got some kind of bruise from it. I got my bell rung, Sunny got a strained middle finger, others got banged around. I pretty much stayed away from anything with an air-valve after that.;)

Betsy wanted to take us on a Birdie dive so I joined her, Sangiro, DiverDriver, SkyDekker and Phreezone on it. The exit was rehearsed well on the ground with Sangiro, Betsy, and Phree on the outside and the rest of us inside the Otter door for the exit. All I could think was "Sangiro's on the dive, don't blow it, don't blow it, don't fuck this up...":$. Okay....here come's the exit count: READY! S....What The Fuck? Yup, at the "S" in "SET!", our own Head Honcho fell right off the Otter dragging the other two with him!:o:D:) We then spent the rest of the dive in a mad chase to them for a sit campfire. I'm just glad it wasn't me.

Sangiro did redeem himself on a later two-way sit dive with me, but we need to get that boy eating more, he's too floaty. Heck, I'm only 5'8", 265# out the door.B|

The parties, as usual, were the stuff that legends are made of. There was one evening where Bytch corrupted AirMail and I by having us all down 5 Jello-Shots each and along with Chuckie's famous margaritas I was definitely feeling no pain....until the next morning.B|

I went with JCEman & TLML and my OKC friends, Cody and Al, on a great sit jump where Al was trying a Crossfire2 demo. After landing, Al was already making plans to sell his Stiletto's and as soon as we got back to the Icarus tent he pulled out the plastic and ordered a 119 on the spot. I've never seen Al get excited about anything so my curiosity was severely piqued. I talked to Simon and a short while later, the lovely Amy at the Icarus tent was packing a Crossfire2 169 into my Mirage for me to go play with.

Oh Sweet Jesus! The openings, the glide, the flare, the turns, the perfect riser pressure, the lack of twitchyness.... Well, let's just say I was in love. I was under canopy by 2800. I was almost two miles out and made it back with more than enough altitude to set up for a great swoop in the huge area by the swoop pond. I brought it back to the Icarus tent and loudly proclaimed to all, "Daddy Likes!" then took her out for two more rides. I'm ordering one in two weeks.B| Damn nylon crack dealers.

I had originally planned to stay until Sunday but Cody, Amber, and I were experiencing some serious "boogie burnout" and left just after noon on Saturday.

I wouldn't trade my time there for anything in the world but it's good to be home. Now, I have to endure the 51 weeks until the next family reunion.

Until then...here are some pics!

It was amazing to me to meet all the DZ.comers i've been talking to online for so long - actually put a name to a face for once. B| I don't think i ran into Kris here, but from the Names I've seen, I had a few very late night conversations with Gimp and I had the Opportunity to be able to hang out with PilotMike along with my Buddies from SkydiveKansas.
I wish i could have gotten out more, but after packing tandems all day everyday, it's hard to make it to the entertainment tent after dusk. [:/]
I can't wait to see how Freaks compares to this...... ;)

Didn't we end up calling that "Jump Foo?"

That, or "WWF Skydiving" ;)

I got bruised up and my bell rung, and I think I got off lightly! Alligator wrestling is hard, especially out the back of an airplane! ;)

Well it's hard to explain how I feel about my WFFC '03 convention experience this year. There was a ton of positive experiences, but there were a few negative experiences where people (friends) got hurt and it really makes you sit up and notice the dangers of such a large event.

First my positive experiences:

It was great to meet a bunch of DZ.COMers who I had yet to meet in person as well as being able to say hello to those who I met at Eloy last x-mas. I'm sad to say that I didn't do any jumps with any of these DZ.COMers (I guess I was busy jumping with the people I was staying with and when I was looking for a DZ.COMer to jump with, they were either hung over or the weather was crappy). But I did manage to pop my head into the DZ.COM tent at least once a day and at night it was easy to find myself standing near the free beer stand at the entertainment tent.

Also, for those of you who were in the entertainment tent the night of the wet t-shirt contests, my friend Peter Konrad (the slurry bomber guy here on DZ.COM) submitted an amateur freefly video entry and thousands of skydivers were forced to watch our skydives and yours truly made several appearances in this video. ;)

The not so negative experiences:

I'm happy to report that I survived Rantoul '03 with no injuries. But I didn't exactly jump that much (29 jumps in total during my vacation) thanks to the crappy weather at times, getting late starts due to alcohol poisoning. But what bums me out is the people (friends) who got injured either skydiving or during the post jumping drunk skydiver celebrations (one example is of a friend who drove a golf cart head on into a fire hydrant at 20 mph and suffered some rib injuries). And I was sad to hear about Lewmonst's injuries.

Anyway, I need to do some work here (to pay for my Rantoul vacation). I hope to see as many of you DZ.COMers at Eloy this x-mas. ;)

PS: I'll be looking to post some of my WFFC still pictures captured from my video camera later tonight.

He ... he ... he ...

I seem to remember sticking my tongue in Moody's mouth as well as the Bytch's mouth on Thursday evening while the Jello shots were flowing freely (god I can't remember what it's even called where I take the shot in my mouth and the pass it on through a kiss to another drunk skydiver). But it was all fun. The first morning I met Moody at the DZ.COM tent, she was pretty quiet (tired and/or hung over?), but it was all fun as she (and others) seemed to be having fun with the Jello shots. ;)

I ran into Mary (Skyrose) one night and that was the only time I saw her the entire convention. Besides the injuries to all those who got hurt, my only real regret from Rantoul was that I didn't jump with any DZ.COMers. >:(

I'm hurt you don't remember running into me while i was out wandering the RV park looking for my tent.

That was actually kind of funny. Here we were (I can't remember what night it was), at 3:00 am about to call it a night in the RV park and there's Sunshine wandering lost looking for her tent far away from where it actually was. A couple of nights later Chuck (SkymonkeyOne) and a few other pretty high profile skydivers managed to roll their golf cart right next to my friend's RV trailer. But I am happy to report that Chuck and the others didn't suffer any serious drunken skydiver injuries.

Man there was some wierd stuff (both good and bad) happening at Rantoul this year.

Rantoul. I am only happy that I am back in Raeford and chilling out without fourty people in my camper. I am still far from getting the thing back in order, but at least it's plugged in and clean now.

Memories:

Driving up the first night (Wednesday the 30th) at around midnight and finding Skybych and crew. Sunshine walked out of her tent, butt naked, and came over for a coctail.

Having 40 people in my 30 foot camper for festivities on the second or third night.

Training so many dotcommers to fly a wingsuit.

Incredibly excessive partying

Being thrown twenty feet after a friend of mine flipped the golf cart we were driving backwards at max throttle in the middle of the night.

My Rodriguez initiation.

Having a tire blow out on my camper at 85mph on the way up there.

Lots of other shit.

memories?? I don't remember anything!
hehe, I remember staying up all night on monday night, getting way too wasted and trying to make negotiations with HH.:D I remember taking long walks on the beach...or down the runway. I hung out with wingi..who was in as good of shape as I was. I kissed the bytch! I am told I had a task force that evening. I do remember recovering for the rest of the week because I was sick before rantoul. Rock on all of you! I met tons of new dz.commers and got to see old friends again. Thanks for the jumps and good times. Rantoul DEFINATELY did not suck.
