just like gold, diamonds have no real value apart from their technological uses...
any object is only worth what society agrees it is...the more easily its replicated the less value it has, perhaps one day we'll value unique thought and vision more than simple material items..

It also depends on how many people want it, and how easy it is to make.

Like when aluminium was first discovered. It was very hard to extract in its metallic form. Napolean even gave an aluminium broach to his wife.

Now that we have electricity, Al is as cheap as chips.
