Mozilla vs. I/E

Recommended Posts

One of my computers at work is being inundated with pop-ups. I mean, we'll come to it in the morning after it being on all night, and there will be 30 of them on the screen. I have a feeling it's because of the kids surfing on it all day while they were here with me at work this summer.

Anyway, I installed Spybot per someone's suggestion on here. Now, I'm reading in Smart Computing (I swear, I'm really not a geek, it's a job requirement!) to ditch Explorer if we don't want pop-ups. So my question is, if I download it, is that something I'm going to have to figure out how to work and get used to? Is everything going to look different? Or, will I just have an new icon to click on (like the big, blue E now), and I can just go about my merry way without really knowing I've changed browsers?

it won't be a huge leap, but you'll find things that you'll learn to love quickly (eg: tabbed browsing, and mouse gestures)

for the most part it will work how you expect it to tho

(NOTE: you be really free of spyware and IE, go to www.gentoo.org and learn the joys of linux
;))

my .02

Mozilla is very nice, but depending on where you surf to you may run into compatibility issues. Its not terribly difficult to learn as its not much different, but i got to annoyed with it crashing on some flash sites etc..si i usually stick to IE...

with Spybot and good security settings on IE you shouldnt see many popups at all..

I changed my parents over to Mozilla last weekend.

Trust me when I say this: If my parents can figure it out, ANYONE can figure it out.

Mozilla is wonderful - it loads pages faster, remembers passwords, automatically fills out form info... and blocks popups.

andrea, if the amount and type of browsing you do doesnt actually tax the capabilities of netscape, i would say no problem. have at it, and that no popup feature sounds pretty cool, but the bottom line is that the browser wars were over 5 years ago. netscape is an ugly redheaded step child that gets beaten regularly. BUT it aint MS so go figure-- nose - spite - face

I never got popups unless I was using explorer. I did get the Messenger Service pop-ups all the time, as long as there was an internet connection exisitng. Tried all the programs to stop it but non worked. Later found out there is a Windows setting that you can change to stop it.

Yup yup..Mozilla is the way to go.

I used to be a die-hard netsape user from the early 2.0 versions up til 4.x. Then that is when problems started. Netscape put in their Quality Feedback agent (read: Crash agent) and I got a crash every time that stupid POS program would start. I mean I tried it on every computer and different hardware over the years, and different OS's. TO this day I still think that MS put something in their OS that made it crash, since Netscape did nothing about it.

I then switched over to IE for a couple years as it was more stable and and... Well, that's about the only reason. I longed for using netscape, but that stupid Crash agent was still in the software and there was no way to disable it at that time.

I heard about mozilla coming out and all the cool features, and have been a loyal Alpha-Beta tester since it was released. Currently at work I use netscape 7.1 which is Mozilla but with a few netscape tweaks to it, plus it handles my mail.

Just recently I wanted to put a browser on a new computer I built but didn't want to install the 14Meg file from Mozilla to install it. So I did a little research on Mozilla's site and found a slimmed down version of mozilla without the mail/news program and without a few of the bells and whistles that regular mozilla has. It's called Firebird and the latest version can be downloaded from the mozilla home page. Look on the left side for the link. (sorry, my clipboard function is skewed on this pc so I can't C/P the link until after a reboot. thanks MS. )

Just my .02... enjoy

oh yeah, mama, where are you surfing? :$ most popup campaigns are reasonable, maybe one or two per visit to the domain. it is the porn sites that set off those evil self propigating popup floods....:o

pop-up hell! :P

You can also get a pop-up blocker for IE if you want to continue to use it... I'd point you the way to them, but I'm using Mozilla Firebird currently, so I have no need for such external programs...

Oh, I'm getting those on my home computer now, telling me if I go to a site, I can stop messenger pop-ups. What's the setting to change it?

Update on my other problem with the pop-ups. Besides the new programs I found installed on the machine, some casino had installed their stuff on the start-up menu, the favorites folder and the desktop.(It's not my computer, so I never noticed it.) Smart Computing says there is a site called Lop.com that does that crap.

Lol, it's not the computer I use, it's the one my Dad and the children use. I'm sure it's from the kids. Most of the pop-ups were casino sites. I know the kids play a lot of on-line games, and I'm pretty sure that's how that computer got overrun.

Not that I'm a fan of Bill Gates, but that can depend on caching and other factors that can be configured as well.

IE remembers passwords and automatically fills out form info, but it asks you when you first use it if you want it to. If you tell it no, then it doesn't.

and blocks popups.

As posted elsewhere, that can be configured as well.
Popups were invented for a reason, but most usage is abusive.

Go with Mozilla... Netscape is Mozilla, if you ever used Netscape, you'll be comfortable with Mozilla. The only bad thing i've noticed with the pop up blocker in Mozilla is that it will block all popups. There are times where a login will be a pop up and you'll be scratching your head wondering why the links not working.

Oh, Mozilla will store your passwords if you load the password manager just like IE

Use Opera, possibly one of the best browsers out there.

spybot will help you wack those and all the things tracking your surfing too...it actually creates a plug in that will block further installation of that stuff..you'll see it on occasion when it tells you what evil programs its blocked..

Are you talking about passwords like my XP password and dropzone.com password? If it automatically stores them, that could cause a problem when certain skydivers come to town and try to sneak on my computer so they can play greenie! :P

I think the two features that have me sold on mozilla are

* stops annoying moving GIF images
* cookie permissions

dropzone.com yes, doubleclick.com no

I couldn't use IE on this computer if I wanted to...but even at work I use mozilla.
