skymama 37 #1 August 12, 2003 One of my computers at work is being inundated with pop-ups. I mean, we'll come to it in the morning after it being on all night, and there will be 30 of them on the screen. I have a feeling it's because of the kids surfing on it all day while they were here with me at work this summer. Anyway, I installed Spybot per someone's suggestion on here. Now, I'm reading in Smart Computing (I swear, I'm really not a geek, it's a job requirement!) to ditch Explorer if we don't want pop-ups. So my question is, if I download it, is that something I'm going to have to figure out how to work and get used to? Is everything going to look different? Or, will I just have an new icon to click on (like the big, blue E now), and I can just go about my merry way without really knowing I've changed browsers? She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

guesswhere 0 #3 August 12, 2003 it won't be a huge leap, but you'll find things that you'll learn to love quickly (eg: tabbed browsing, and mouse gestures) for the most part it will work how you expect it to tho (NOTE: you be really free of spyware and IE, go to www.gentoo.org and learn the joys of linux ) ------- ... Zenister 0 #4 August 12, 2003 my .02 Mozilla is very nice, but depending on where you surf to you may run into compatibility issues. Its not terribly difficult to learn as its not much different, but i got to annoyed with it crashing on some flash sites etc..si i usually stick to IE... with Spybot and good security settings on IE you shouldnt see many popups at all..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. AndyMan 7 #6 August 12, 2003 I changed my parents over to Mozilla last weekend. Trust me when I say this: If my parents can figure it out, ANYONE can figure it out. Mozilla is wonderful - it loads pages faster, remembers passwords, automatically fills out form info... and blocks popups. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. pds 0 #8 August 12, 2003 andrea, if the amount and type of browsing you do doesnt actually tax the capabilities of netscape, i would say no problem. have at it, and that no popup feature sounds pretty cool, but the bottom line is that the browser wars were over 5 years ago. netscape is an ugly redheaded step child that gets beaten regularly. BUT it aint MS so go figure-- nose - spite - face lolnamaste, motherfucker.
Galen 0 #9 August 12, 2003 I never got popups unless I was using explorer. I did get the Messenger Service pop-ups all the time, as long as there was an internet connection exisitng. Tried all the programs to stop it but non worked. Later found out there is a Windows setting that you can change to stop it.
Cornholio 0 #10 August 12, 2003 Yup yup..Mozilla is the way to go. I used to be a die-hard netsape user from the early 2.0 versions up til 4.x. Then that is when problems started. Netscape put in their Quality Feedback agent (read: Crash agent) and I got a crash every time that stupid POS program would start. I mean I tried it on every computer and different hardware over the years, and different OS's. TO this day I still think that MS put something in their OS that made it crash, since Netscape did nothing about it. I then switched over to IE for a couple years as it was more stable and and... Well, that's about the only reason. I longed for using netscape, but that stupid Crash agent was still in the software and there was no way to disable it at that time. I heard about mozilla coming out and all the cool features, and have been a loyal Alpha-Beta tester since it was released. Currently at work I use netscape 7.1 which is Mozilla but with a few netscape tweaks to it, plus it handles my mail. Just recently I wanted to put a browser on a new computer I built but didn't want to install the 14Meg file from Mozilla to install it. So I did a little research on Mozilla's site and found a slimmed down version of mozilla without the mail/news program and without a few of the bells and whistles that regular mozilla has. It's called Firebird and the latest version can be downloaded from the mozilla home page. Look on the left side for the link. (sorry, my clipboard function is skewed on this pc so I can't C/P the link until after a reboot. thanks MS. ) Just my .02... enjoy Butthead: Whoa! Burritos for breakfast! Beavis: Yeah! Yeah! bwilling 0 #12 August 12, 2003 QuoteBargain Buddy IMBUM.com Memory Meter pop-up hell! You can also get a pop-up blocker for IE if you want to continue to use it... I'd point you the way to them, but I'm using Mozilla Firebird currently, so I have no need for such external programs... What's the setting to change it? Update on my other problem with the pop-ups. Besides the new programs I found installed on the machine, some casino had installed their stuff on the start-up menu, the favorites folder and the desktop.(It's not my computer, so I never noticed it.) lummy 4 #19 August 12, 2003 Go with Mozilla... Netscape is Mozilla, if you ever used Netscape, you'll be comfortable with Mozilla. The only bad thing i've noticed with the pop up blocker in Mozilla is that it will block all popups. There are times where a login will be a pop up and you'll be scratching your head wondering why the links not working.
