So, how the hell does THIS work?

Recommended Posts

I've seen some nice swoop action at Raeford, but...

WTF?

How can this possibly end favorably for the canopy pilot? I've seen videos of this, too, so I know it's done. How can this happen? That is, it looks to me like the pilot would totally burn sideways into the ground?

Oh, and, NO, I'm not thinking of trying this with my (read: "Raeford's") Navigator 220!

BTW: Pic grabbed from Performance Designs Photo Area.

I'm a PD snob already :P. Heath Richardson is two years younger than I am and he's pulling this crap off. Jeez...I'm getting old.

Yes, I know it is snowing.
No, we are not putting the top up.

My first thought was "Man, what a crappy photoshop job", since it actually looks fake.

Then I followed the link to PD's website....

Holy Shit! That's just insane!

I mean, christ, it looks painful to me, and they haven't even landed yet!

I can see no way out of that and they don't show it on the vid.

Awww hell, there's plenty of ways out of that. Simple physics proves it.Lift, drag, rate of turn, ect. No problem for a select few canopy pilots.

The catch is not getting out of that situation. It's knowing exactly how to get out of that BEFORE you get into it.

They just sorta pop it back up. It's pretty cool to see. I've even seen it done over Lake Michigan with a paraglider; hard diving turn, lean it way over, end cell in the water, and pop it up to land on the floating platform. Wicked cool.

I heard some stories of when Richardson was trying to learn that move. He can actually touch his end cell to the ground and pull it back up to normal attitude and land standing up.

The stories related some very NOT pretty landings while trying to learn that, though...

Oh, and "how...does this work?" By being one of the best fucking canopy pilots in the damn world, thats how.:P

Apparently there IS a way to pull that off cause I just saw Heath at Crosskeys on Tuesday!

It just isn't fair to be such a kickass swooper and be able to freefly the way he does. Come on God! Spread the wealth a little!:)
When I grow up, I wanna be able to swoop and fly like that. Someday.....

All it is is a massive carve.

You have to flare and pull the wing back level.

Learning it is hard...doing it once you know how is not.

Last time they were at zhills, they were practicing a team swoop pond manuever. 3 people come from one direction and the 4th comes directly at them from opposite ends of the pond. The opposing swooper flies towards the middle of the 3. The middle of the 3 pops up over him as he passes between the other 2. Couldn't hardly watch it. :o
