billvon 3,114 #51 August 15, 2003 >The usual definition of god is simple enough: eternal, omnipotent > omniscient perfect creator source being, unlimited and all powerful, > him to whom all things are possible. Hmm, I don't define god that way, and a great many people don't. >>Nope, not religious, BUT I've studied theology pretty damned deeply. >Whatever for? Why? Wisdom; it appears in many places, often not the places you'd expect.
Zenister 0 #52 August 15, 2003 Quote101 binary does NOT=101 reality. of course it is, that statement is absurd, because you dont think in binary easily does not make it less 'real'. Any more than not thinking in swahili makes it less real than english .the binary system is equally as 'real' as base 10, or hexidecimal, or base 12 even.. in fact far more calculations are done in hex and binary everyday, than have ever been performed in base 10... please... if you stick to the simplistic definitions you are using 'proof' of anything is easy..its all in how you define it.. god is that which is beyond the definitions & limitations of man..____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. quade 4 #53 August 16, 2003 Maybe what he's saying is that the written "101" is just a symbol and in reality nothing more than a symbol. It's kind of like how people get upset about flag burning. People aren't burning the country, they're burning a symbol of the country. It's important not to confuse a symbol with the thing it symbolizes. Otherwise, you're missing the entire point. Or, as Lau-tzu said, Quote 1. The Tao that can be followed is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The nameless is the origin of heaven and earth While naming is the origin of the myriad things. Therefore, always desireless, you see the mystery Ever desiring, you see the manifestations. These two are the same-- When they appear they are named differently. This sameness is the mystery, Mystery within mystery; The door to all marvels. quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Push 0 #54 August 16, 2003 QuoteWhy do you believe that 1+1=2? Because someone told you and you believe them. You don't have any proof. You both misunderstand the basic principle of reasoning on which mathematics and philosophy are built on, as well as anyone that asks someone to prove that 1+1=2. They are both DEDUCTIVE sciences, not INDUCTIVE. They do not take physical events and assign meaning to them, they take logical definitions and derive things from them. I define the symbol 2 to represent the operation 1+1. I define the symbol 3 to represent the operation 1+1+1. By the standard definition of + and 1 in an object called a field, the definition of which you can find in your favorite algebra book, as well as by the standard definition of equality, 1+1 =/= 1+1+1. I now define 2 to represent the operation 1*1. I define 3 to represent the oepration 1*1*1. Now 2=3. You are assigning implicit meaning to symbols that has not been explicitly defined. In the case of 2 and 3 you are implicitly assuming that they mean 1+1 and 1+1+1, respectively. This implicit meaning is derived from your observation of daily life. You are INDUCING, not DEDUCING. The same fallacy applies to all of these arguments for and against God. First, you MUST define what God means! I define God to be my cellphone. By observation, my cellphone exists.
