More Questions ...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Thanks for replying to my message, being new to both skydiving and this forum I have more questions. Please let me know if I am asking them in the wrong place b/c I dont wanna piss anyone off!

When i write a new message on here if its on a different subject should i start a new thread or just keep going with my original one ?

Does anyone know of any good Australian web sites with this sort of setup where I can get in contact with other skydivers in Australia? Also does anyone have any good videos on sky diving that they can send me ... i would be happy to pay for them or know where I can get some ... videos pretty much on just footage of jumps to wet my appetite :) ... i am finding that the skydiving scene in Australia does not seem to be that big ... i may be wrong tho and just looking in the wrong places ....

In relation to the safety of this sport ... i will be doing my liscence when i have the money to keep my skills up but just out of interest ... how dangerous really is the sport ... i mean do u guys have a lot of accident or close calls or is it relatively safe if u know what u are doing and are sensible ....

Thanks guys for ur messages ... and i love just reading what everyone else is talking about

Andrew

Hello, I wish I could reply with an answer to your post. However, maybe as a partial answer...I have also been looking for skydiving videos and such.. I searched the book store, Barnes and Nobles, and Borders and found that I had to order any books. Many videos were simply not available. Therfore I have come to the conclusion that we must search the internet. Maybe eBay, but I doubt it. I haven't done much searching the past couple of days but I did save the lists that I got from the book stores. I will look tomorrow and if I find anyting interesting I will let ya know!

All my life I've been called Rocky, but now some say in my tandem jump photo that I really look like Rocky the squirrel!

Hi Andrew! Maybe this will help . . .

First, search the forums for the subject of your question . . . often there are many previous threads that are packed with information. Next, I would separate my questions into separate posts if the subjects are not closely related. Also, I would definitely choose a new thread, choosing the forum that best suits the question: for example, your question about the safety of the sport might best be answered by being posted in "Safety and Training."

Now, on to your other questions . . .

I don't know of an Australian Message Board, but I do know that there are a lot of Aussies registered here. From the home page, click on "Skydivers" on the left and choose "More search options." Then choose "Pacific/Australia" as the region and search. You will find quite a number of Aussies there, including many at your own DZ (you can narrow the search in that way by typing your DZ name in the appropriate field).

I believe skydiving the be inherently dangerous, but it is made safe by state-of-the-art equipment and training, and a general attitude of safety and responsibility among its participants. When compared to many other daily activities, skydiving is much safer, in my opinion. You see, because I know it's dangerous, I respect that danger, and take precautions to keep it as safe as possible. Many "whuffos" who ask the question "what happens if both of your parachutes fail" do not ask themselves the same question about the brakes in their car which they drive on the freeway every day. I have had isolated incidents where the equipment did not perform like it was supposed to, but never a "close call" (by my definiition, anyway).

I find skydiving videos on eBay quite often (do a search for "skydiving"). Also, the best skydiving internet classifieds (IMHO) are right here on this site. There is a "Video" category all by itself.

Great questions . . . be safe and have fun! B|

Nah, since you're a newbie you won't piss us off, we'll just move a thread to a more appropriate forum...like I'm about to do now. :P Just look at the forum titles, and think about where your post needs to go. Since you already have an Intros thread, I'm going to move this thread over to Talkback. No big deal this time, I like playing with my moderator buttons. ;)

If it's a totally different subject, go ahead and start a new thread. In case you haven't been to this links already, here are the FAQ's and the Forum Rules. Follow what those links tell ya, and you'll be good to go!

Go to this site and you will find tons of free skydiving footage. There are great videos available as well, but I'd start here if I were you! ;)

In relation to safety in the sport...

Stay current, skydiving is not a half-hearted past time. If you are going to jump, jump often and practice emergency procedures.

Maintain your gear. If you want your rig to serve as a life saving device, treat it like it is a life saving device. It is that simple.

Keep your ears open. There will always be more to learn. There is no plateau of invincibility in this sport, not even with several thousand skydives under your belt.

Under canopy, keep your head on a swivel, cause your ass is in your hands.
