Schwarzenegger Campaign -- Washington Post

Recommended Posts

How Lowe can you go?:S

You know, I'm voting for McClintock. I can't handle a child molester (I know, not convicted. He did community service for his videotaped indiscretions with that underaged girl) being a big part of the campaign.

And why? So that he can rally up the Hollywood crowd to support Arnold.

I'm voting for McClintock.

This is just my opinion, but I believe that Schwarzeneggar's picks of Buffet and rumors or Lowe are designed to provide a shield from the "left". Buffet, a democrat, is not only symbolic of being serious about building a positive business environment, it also shows that he is trying not to hold any ideology against anyone. Buffet is a supreme capitalist, shrewd investor and has enough personal wealth to pay off the state debt with one check, and still have a billion or two left. He should be able to look at the numbers and put forth ideas without worry about what side of the aisle he's talking from.

Lowe is certainly a bridge to pull influence in Hollywood and activists NorCal (SF Bay area) toward the center, and develop just a bit of indecisiveness so that it chips away at what little Davis has left and prevent Bustamante from capitalizing on that segment.

Now, all that said, let's hope that there won't be an attempt to propose a new Proposition revising Prop 13. Oi ve... :S

I'm not in California, so I'm definitely qualified to comment. Right?

Anyway, from what I've read so far, Ahnold studies what he's interested in, and is extremely disciplined and thorough. Whether or not I agree with him, these are good qualities. Would I vote for him? Dunno yet -- I'm still a little flabbergasted with the "I don't want to wait to vote" approach y'all are taking.

What's to wait for? And can you imagine the long wait for the voting booths if people -did- wait? Come on new, that's a pretty big-assed list!

I'm pretty sure that a number of the candidates are pretty easy to eliminate and dismiss without so much as firing 2 neurons.

Gary Coleman, Angelyne, Larry Flint, Mary Carey, Trek "THUNDER" Kelly, Gallagher, . . . Arnold.

Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway currently goes for $2510 a share because he doesn't believe in the concept of stock splits. ???? He is also a big proponent of extremely high inheritance taxes. Believes everyone is entitled to personal wealth, they should just have to build it themselves. No help from Mommy and Daddy. Also thought he was HQ'd in Omaha. Does that mean he won't even be able to vote in the election in which he is an integral player?

So, what exactly is the point you're making? All I said was that for what he has accomplished, his business acumen has few equals in the world and his interest in working to turn the California economy is also a clear sign as to how important this is, long term to the rest of the country. You don't need to be a California resident to have a vested interest in California interest (of which, Buffet has both).

My personal opinion is he is quirky at a time when an actor running for Governor probably wants to exude an aura of stability. If I am a capitalist and I have a good product to sell, I want to price it at a competitive level. Many on the Street feel the price of a share of stock should be about the cost of meal, $25 - $40. He is locking out a lot of people who don't want to invest because of his policies. It's a good product, but to get into it, most people would have to go to a third party (mutual fund) to get some. If I am going to do that, I would probably go with something from Bill Miller at Legg Mason.

Since posting the first time, Buffet has come out and said people in CA are not paying enough in taxes. I don't live there, but would any of you who do live there care to comment?

But, of course, that only cuts out the "stupid" investors.

The smart people know that it really doesn't matter what the price per share is. The real thing that matters is return on investment.

He said they're not paying enough in _property_ taxes. State income comes from income and sales taxes primarily; some motor vehicle taxes as well. Local-government income comes from property taxes and local sales taxes (an additional 1/4 percent or something on top of the CA 7%.) Prop 13 essentially limited what the government could charge in property taxes.

Of course, nothing's free, and the money that used to come from property taxes now comes from increased sales taxes. In addition, the state government now has to send more money to local governments (and more importantly local schools) to keep them afloat, neccessitating higher state taxes.

Doesn't much matter to me. Currently I like Prop 13 because I own a house, but I also realize that I'm going to pay that money one way or another.

I'm against his idea, but I understand why he brought it up. However, Prop 13 cannot be overturned by legislation, there would have to be a whole new Proposition (might happen just as hell froze over).

Regarding Bershire Hathaway's stock price. The Board of Directors and the initiatives submitted by proxy by shareholders. Stock splits are not always good, in fact, there is little benefit to them for the shareholder anyway.

B/H's annual report plainly shows where they have their major investments, Coca-Cola, AMEX, a couple banks...you don't need $75,000 for a share of Class A stock in B/H or $2500 for a B share. Just invest in what B/H invests in. B/H is hardly responsible for preventing people from getting involved in their own investments.
