JumpCrazy 0 #77 August 15, 2003 Well, I live in London, Ontario and the power went out here at about 4:15pm and was fixed by 9:30 in some parts of the city. If the power hadn't have come back on today, I could have taken the day off work and started the weekend early. oh well. My dad was at Long Point On. when this happened and his power never went out. That is strange since all the major cities surrounding Long Point on every side were without power (Widsor/Detroit, London, Toronto, Cleveland, NY).Flying Hellfish #
MarkF 0 #78 August 15, 2003 Quotego to solar or wind power... Solar and wind is good but I reckon that politico-thermal would be best. If we could somehow harness the hot air emanating from Washington, Canberra, London, etc. there'd never be any shortage of energy...Quoteand get a decent electric network... You've already got a truly oustanding network. You've also got far too many BIG power stations which pose all sorts of extra problems should things get out of whack. If a generator suddenly goes out you all of a sudden put load on other generators and if the dead 'un is big enough you may threaten the (frequency) stability of the other generators. Whole areas are turned off to protect the stability. Not just randomly either, load shedding is done VERY carefully - suddenly removing a load is every bit as bad for stability as removing a generator. Lots and lots of smallish generating plants of whatever type are the answer. We've only really recently learnt this though, and it will take a long time to get away from the generally well entrenched "big plant" mentality that's so far served damn well. The people I really feel for ATM are those replacing the 500mW, and bigger, "circuit breakers". When those suckers "trip" they go KA-FUCKING-BOOM but they save the cabling...Ooroo Mark F... SkyDekker 1,465 #80 August 15, 2003 QuoteWell, I live in London, Ontario I did not know that, I am in London quite a few times every week. We should get together and have a beer. My company will even pay for the beer Well guys, I am pretty sure it was not a lightning strike, since we had clear blue skies all day yesterday. Right now, I have a mall in St. Catharines and a mall in London who were out for most of the night. Thankfully, nothing scary happened, though it easily could have. They are scheduling 2 hour rolling black outs for Ontario, trying to get everybody back onlinre. My mall in London has been designated a local relief point, should conditions get any worse. SO I may be on the orad heading for that mall should that happen. In the mean time, we have two major malls in the greater toronto area who will run out of diesel for their generators in about 3 hours. Life is about to get real interesting for me. . If I get a chance later, I will give you guys another update. Funny enough the us is hearing about a lightning strike in Canada and we are hearing about a major explosion and fire in a power plant in New York Reporting in a state of confusion rarely gets the information across correctly. Well, I am off and deal with a couple of hundred thousand customers and retailers.........

Push 0 #82 August 15, 2003 I'm in Toronto and power came back on around 4am tonight. Overall the response was excellent. As I understand there were no real problems with the law, and people were helping the cops direct traffic. The news finger-pointing was a joke. People walked home from work, so downtown was like the exodus. Toronto with no lights at night was freaky. You could see the night sky for a change.
