power outages

Recommended Posts

Half of Philly was out Tuesday for 12 hours (both my work and home). A power substation was flooded and caught fire. Real pain in the ass. Interesting that I could live in a tent for 10 days at Rantoul since I was prepared for it, but it screwed me at home.

Funny thing is I was talking to someone from Cali about it and he asked, "How bad was the looting?"

I told him, "There wasn't any."

"Oh yeah, you're not in California.", was his response.

:D

(side note/issue - If it did happen in Cali there probably would be looting, and there probably will be in NY. So why not in Philly? Because we're allowed to have guns here to protect ourselves, and the potential looters know it.)

just a couple of engineers who slept during their studies...;)

since the grids are connected, they can handle minor problems but major overloads can cause a domino effect.

there was a major blackout in the 60's when a primary line relays to NYC failed and the power that had been flowing toward New York City had to go elswhere, instantly. The grid wasn't prepared to handle this overload and generators all over started to shut down to protect the grid.

we are slaves of electricity...

I doubt many people are worried about the day, night fall, however, is in just about an hour and a half.

The City during a power outage is a not a good place to be.
