PhillyKev 0 #27 August 14, 2003 Half of Philly was out Tuesday for 12 hours (both my work and home). A power substation was flooded and caught fire. Real pain in the ass. Interesting that I could live in a tent for 10 days at Rantoul since I was prepared for it, but it screwed me at home. Funny thing is I was talking to someone from Cali about it and he asked, "How bad was the looting?" I told him, "There wasn't any." "Oh yeah, you're not in California.", was his response. (side note/issue - If it did happen in Cali there probably would be looting, and there probably will be in NY. So why not in Philly? Because we're allowed to have guns here to protect ourselves, and the potential looters know it.)

AndyMan 7 #29 August 14, 2003 Correction - this is the THIRD time in recent history this has happened... 1965, 1977, and now. Each time it's suposedly "fixed" so a failure won't cascade the next time something blows... _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

AndyMan 7 #31 August 14, 2003 Also, oddly enough an article ran in todays New York Times (still available) describing the use of semiconductors to mitigate large power surges... http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/14/technology/14GRID.html _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. falxori 0 #32 August 14, 2003 just a couple of engineers who slept during their studies... since the grids are connected, they can handle minor problems but major overloads can cause a domino effect. there was a major blackout in the 60's when a primary line relays to NYC failed and the power that had been flowing toward New York City had to go elswhere, instantly. The grid wasn't prepared to handle this overload and generators all over started to shut down to protect the grid. we are slaves of electricity... O "Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero."
