No matter what else you might think about the UN, consider that many of the people who work for it, by and large, want to dedicate their lives to peace in one way or another. He had worked for the human rights commission since 1969. He's lived and worked in hot spots all of his life. And he's helped make some of them noticeably better -- you don't hear about Pristina and East Timor on the news nearly as much any more. Sergio Vieira de Mello's cv So let's quit pissing about who did what to whom, and just take a moment to mourn him, and his co-workers, and the innocent civilians on the bus in Israel, and the conditions that people live in that some of them think that this kind of insanity has any place in the world. It doesn't. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. US aint much better than most others.. why does US borther to be a member of UN as they dont follow the rules,or make them US freindly anyway.. theres a good reason that US has as many enimyes as they has...so, are you saying that it wouldn't have happened or we wouldn't have heard about it because it happened to the iraqi people? First of all... EXACTLY. The civilian casualties numbers were not ideal, BUT were about the same as what Saddam caused. But now the numbers are dropping because the main push is over. Civilian lives have been saved in the long run. Now, as for the UN bombing. The UN took care to seperate itself from the US. In fact, the US offered security advice and personell to the UN facility, but it was declined. The people that bombed this building were ignorant, and hurt the people that stuck up and tried to protect them from the US. It was just an outright stupid move. I guess bush does not have a monopoly on those.

Once again, that was not the stated objective for this war and hence an absolutely mute argument. Freeing the country of a terribly evil dictator was a side product. Pretty lame to be claiming that as a major victory after the fact.
billvon 3,111 #30 August 20, 2003 >The UN took care to seperate itself from the US. You got that exactly backwards. The US disregarded the UN once it was clear it would not get what it wanted. The UN has been offering humanitarian help since the war ended; our administration has been trying to decide whether to allow it or a coalition of favorite nations to provide assistance for things like infrastructure rebuilding.
