Can you find a balance between living/sleeping/breathing skydiving?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me if there is a middle ground in the sport? When I skydive I love it, it's life in it's self to an extent. I find it so encompassing that most other things disappear. The problem is that I like to do a lot of other things, mountain bike, backpack, travel, etc in the summer. I'm having a hard time finding the balance, when I'm living my life at the dropzone it's un-explainable as you all know, and I'm broke. When I'm not there I have some more money but I miss it, it's like something is missing.

I'm sure there are others who have felt this, how did/do you make the decision?

Lets see, I don't mountain bike anymore, infact my $1000 Specialized was stolen last year, too, but I had quit seriously riding long before that...my paintball gear is in my closet, haven't played in 2 years...my rockclimbing gear is scattered in another closet...my backpacking gear is here in my room, but I haven't used it since I went to Big Bend a bit over a year ago.

FIDO, go to the DZ and live life.

Get a job in the skydiving industry.

The low pay will liimit the number of jumps you can make thus freeing up time for other recreational activities, and being around it forty hours a week will help you deal with not being able to jump as much as you want to.

At least that's what I keep telling myself. :D

How about you just jump outa planes 'till you have no money, then ride your bike, and climb rocks until you get some again.
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

What you mean to tell me skydiving isn't normal?

Lol i mean to tell you that the lifecycle of a skydiver isn't normal. Obsessive thoughts about jumping, spending every $ earned on lift tickets and new skydiving toys, obsession with turbine aircraft....
Just isn't right.

I've decided that, for now, this IS normal life. Like Aggie, my closet is home to snorkeling gear, hiking/camping gear, martial arts gear, and climbing gear. The canoe hasn't seen water in 2 years. The only things that get any use are the kites and my bicycle. And for the first time in 13 years, I don't have any kind of garden at all.

I imagine that eventually I'll get back into those passtimes, but these days I'd rather be at the dz. And that's how I like it! Working, eating, sleeping, skydiving... sounds like a good balance to me!

Don't sweat it. If you love what you're doing, don't beat yourself up for not doing the things you don't love as much.[:/]

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

My WIFE is very good at telling me what the balance is. My attic is used to rotate my seasonal sport gear. Like ridetofly, my wind surfer has not touched the water in a while. My ski gear is not used much (damn warm winters in So Cal) and camping gear is WAAAAYYYY in the back collecting dust.

at Eloy i was certainly having that problem, but in the NW it wont be to hard to find something else to do once the weather shuts us down except for the occasional H&P...
