CanuckInUSA 0 #26 August 19, 2003 So is Phoenix's economy grinding to a halt? Damm dude ... it's easy to joke about this event when it doesn't effect you, but people's livelyhoods depend on getting around. It's not such a big deal if you work at home or can ride a bike to work (assuming people won't suffer heat stroke in the afternoon). But I'm sure this isn't the case for most of Phoenix's residents. Any signs of the pipeline being brought back online? PS: Did you ever sell you Crossfire2? I still can't buy it (I ordered a bigger one than yours), but I'm just curious. See you at the Eloy Holiday boogie. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over
Deuce 1 #27 August 19, 2003 QuoteMy Harley runs great on 100LL. Yeah, but it doesn't have a catalytic convertor. My Bimmer runs it like it's nitrous, but the catalytic convertor on it is not required, even in California. I was a pump jockey in California way back when we all thought that gas could NEVER get over $1.00 per gallon. Then one night the rep from Mobil came out and cut another hole in the pumps to put a black metal "1" in front of the numbers that moved, and they jimmied up a way to put a "1" in front of the price advertisement signs. The amount of gas available really didn't change much, just everybody was panicked and felt the need to keep their tanks full. Rather than being in the storage tanks at the station, it was driving around in everybodies cars. Remember rationing? I made a nice profit bringing neighbors cars to work to fill up before and after my shift. "Check your oil Ma'am?"
freeflygoddess 0 #28 August 19, 2003 They said 7 to 14 days to get it fixed last night on the news. I can't go that long without jumping it will kill me.....

VivaHeadDown 0 #30 August 19, 2003 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Reply To -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >The governor just put up a phone line for gas >stations that are raising there gas prices are going >to be fined! The right way to handle this - let gas stations charge whatever they want. They will up the prices until many people can't afford gas, and the demand will drop off until all gas stations have enough gas to supply the remaining customers. People will drive less, use the Neon instead of the Excursion, drive to Tuscon to get gas etc until the crisis passes. The wrong way to handle this - set a price cap. Every station that opens will be bombarded by traffic and will run dry within an hour. Lines will be incredibly long, cars will stall there in line and block everyone else, and there will be cases of gas-line violence. Exactly the same thing happened during the 1970's gas shortage. You'd think we'd learn. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your "right way" would never work because people would whine about it until something got done, and if nothing got done they'd demand a recall until they got someone who would fix things back to the way they were. When gas prices go up because of war, or economic issues, or anything that we can't put a finger on directly, we quietly mumble about it but accept it. When there is a broken pipe, and fixing the pipe will solve everything, then not doing anything about it will not change people's habbits. It will piss them off beyond the point of just gas-line violence.
fasterfaller 0 #31 August 19, 2003 I am having no problem finding gas . I use a private fueling station and all the tanks are full . I do pay a few cents a gallon more but when this shit happens I don't worry about getting gas . The nice thing about this service is that they do not accept credit cards so there is no wait .
fasterfaller 0 #32 August 19, 2003 QuoteThe pipe line that supplys Phoenix with gas has broken in between Tucson and Phoenix....So they can't supply gas,and they don't have enough trucks to supply the whole city...So that means there is a hand full of gas stations left. So that means I'm going to fill up with Av gas! I hope you are not falling for that line of bullshit because only 20% of the Phoenix supply comes from that line . This is just the oil companies way of fucling us in the ass . I will leave you with this thought , if we still have 80% of the supply , why are 90% of gas stationg out ? Answer , oil company greed . fasterfaller 0 #33 August 19, 2003 Quote>So that means I'm going to fill up with Av gas! Warning - 100LL is not really low lead. It contains a lot of lead and will destroy your catalytic converter. That means a lot of $$ next time you have to have an emissions test for your registration. I run a couple of my cars on avgas but the engines are built to handle this fuel . If you are not careful you can do severe damage to your engine . I also have a account set up and I pay the road tax on this fuel . If you get caught they can get you for tax evasion . fasterfaller 0 #34 August 19, 2003 QuoteMy Harley runs great on 100LL. It ran even better on 110-130. I love it when I am idling and mine and everyone else around me's eyes start burning. Lovely. I know what you mean . I love watching the people behind my nova when they get a whiff of avgas . I also use a booster from kemco oil in utah to boost it up to 115 . billvon 3,087 #35 August 19, 2003 >I will leave you with this thought , if we still have 80% of the supply , > why are 90% of gas stationg out ? Because there is absolutely no margin in the supply. You lose 20% of the supply, 20% of the stations run out of gas. People panic and want to fill up their Excursions; they all run to the remaining stations. They run out of gas. Now 60% of the stations are out of gas, and they're the most often used ones. The remaining ones (the ones in the boonies) get no press coverage, and they can't pump out their tanks and send the gas into the city anyway.
billvon 3,087 #36 August 19, 2003 >Your "right way" would never work because people would whine about >it until something got done . . . The nice thing about that way is that you don't have to do anything, just let service stations charge whatever they want. Government inertia will prevent the whining from having an immediate effect. But you're right in the long run. People will call it 'gouging' and elect a DA/governor/state assemblyman etc that promises to fight the gougers, and you'll get long lines, shortages and violence. The total amount of gas will not, of course, increase.
freeflygoddess 0 #37 August 19, 2003 I just hope that this means that there will be 90% less gas in our otters as well....Last weekend I didn't get on a single load without atleast two people gassing up the plane. Why do people eat such nasty smelly foods before they jump is beyond me...lol...sorry had to change this up a little Kathryn
fasterfaller 0 #38 August 19, 2003 Bill , the sad thing is they have tried several times to make a law about price gouging and the oil companies make sure they buy it out of existence with political contributions . Fucking bastards
MissMae 0 #39 August 19, 2003 Well I won't have any problems finding gas. I filled up on Friday so I should be good until around the 5th or the 12th of September... Can usually go around 3 weeks without filling up! Thank god for my little car that "can make it to Vail on a tank of gas" (according to the commercials). I have a little Golf TDI and my average is about 750 miles to a tank. take the time to appreciate the people around you.
wmw999 2,558 #40 August 19, 2003 I was jumping during one of the gas crises of the past. We camped at the DZ on Saturday night most of the time, we carpooled with someone with a little car (often that was me), and we thought about what we needed before heading out to the DZ, so that we didn't have to make a lot of runs to the store. We could do that all the time, y'know... Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
freeflyz 0 #41 August 19, 2003 Just got back from trying to get fuel and the line is about 15 miles NO LIE!
billvon 3,087 #42 August 19, 2003 >Can usually go around 3 weeks without filling up! Yeah, I can go around 600 miles on a tank (11 gallons.) That's a month of trips to the DZ for me. 2 weeks if I'm going to Perris.
BikerBabe 0 #43 August 19, 2003 It's very interesting reading the quotes from "citizens in Phoenix" about how they never thought gas being as precious as gold, etc. I hope this serves as a wake up call to at least a few people in Phoenix that we need to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels. Maybe, just maybe, we can hope that few people will change their lifestyles as a result of this. Maybe. I love my little car, and our deisel full-size van gets better mileage than most SUVs. I'm interested to see the aftermath of this.Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
freeflyz 0 #44 August 19, 2003 The funny thing about is they'll forget about it in a couple of weeks! People are not running out of gas most of the are topping of there tanks.Unlike me which I have not a drop or any fumes to get to any gas station! Luckly I live really close to my job and can walk to work,it takes me about half an hour to forty five min to get there!

billvon 3,087 #47 August 19, 2003 >But Damn talk about "Gouging" I'm all for gouging. You ask what the market will bear for your product. If you're Jennifer Lopez and you want to price your CD's for $100 - why not? You may not make any money. If you're really that good you might clean up. People have choices. There are diesel cars, natural gas cars - Toyota even sells an electric SUV now. And many gas cars nowadays will run on E85. (alcohol.) If gas companies want to overprice gas, well, diesel suppliers may just gradually take over the market. Natural gas fueling stations, or E85 stations, may become more popular. Forcing any company to sell its product at a government-mandated price actually helps _reduce_ the supply. Would you want to sell more or less gasoline if you lost 2 cents on every gallon you sold? freeflyz 0 #48 August 20, 2003 Just got back from the gas station!!!! Only took 2 1/2 hours to buy fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MissMae 0 #49 August 20, 2003 You sound just like my boyfriend. He is always mentioning that if gas was more expensive like it is back home for him in Germany that people would start thinking about saving their natural resources. He talked me into my little diesel car, and I've thanked him for bringing it up.. Especially since I've got 21,000 on the car already and only made about 25 trips to the gas station. But I do see how much money I save when before I had to go every week and sometimes twice a week, now I go once a month, twice if I drive all over hell and creation. take the time to appreciate the people around you. happythoughts 0 #50 August 20, 2003 Making gas more expensive doesn't bother people who a> can afford a new fuel efficient car or b> don't care what price it is because you are rich. If you drive an old car like my roommate and cannot afford a new car to replace it, then your life sucks. Raising the price of gas to be really expensive only punishes the working poor.
