For computer boffins - HELP

Recently, over the past couple of days my PC has been doing weird things. It started with the msblast virus which I have cured, but now after I start up my machine Internet Explorer seems to start up of its own accord. It doesn't just start up once either it just continues to boot up an infinite number of times. I've counted dozens of open IE windows before I could shut them all down.

It's driving me nuts..........





Please help me before I smash the f*cking thing against a wall. I can't really afford that and i've got some nice pics,videos and tunes on it.

BTW i'm running Windows XP.

to add to the confusion... i have an email problem as well..... i use aol and while at work, i check it on aol.com. as of yesterday i started getting a bunch (like 50) emails saying MAILER DEMON, returned mail service, undeliverable mail, etc messages. but im not sending anyone emails. its getting to be quite rediculous. anyone that knows something i can to to make them stop would be greatly helpful to me!

Download Spybot and run it. (use the update feature first though)

It will remove spyware. I can't be sure that's it but it's a good Idea any way.

Are you behind a NAT router or firewall? XP has a built in firewall.

Ok here is what you need:

1.- go to a convenience store

2.- look for lighter fluid

3.- pay for the lighter fluid..

4.- Go home

5.- proceed to get your pc in your back yard, preferably away from flamable materials

6.- get lighter fluid

7.- get your pc wet with all the lighter fluid

8.- light a match( preferred method) and throw it at PC.

9.- call the fire dept, in case things get out of hand

10.- go buy another e-machine.

Disable javascripting. An attack on IE js control is usually what causes multiple IE windows to open until the system crashes. It's been discussed here before and on rec.skydiving.

i would suspect that neither of you , iam or alana, have current antivirus software running, as both of your described symptoms are indicative of the latest virus outbreaks.

the rpc mechanism that is causing the shutdowns can be disabled by opening services and changing the response type to restart service instead of restart machine.

the emails are typical email worm symptoms and will require a cleaning. go to symantec's web site and poke around for a cure.

For problem #1 - Lavasoft makes a fantastic program called AdAware

Download it, download their latest definitions, run it, clean your system. Pretty certain that will fix your problem.

Problem #2 - It's the sobig.f virus. Someone just told me 1 in 17 emails on the internet at this moment are that virus. No, you probably don't have it, but someone you know (or at least that has your email address on their system) does. It picks one of the email addresses they have and puts it in the "From" line of the email, so all non-delieverable mail responses get sent to you. You'll probably get a few that say "You sent us a virus" too. And be careful, because I'm pretty sure once a system is infected, it replies with a copy of the virus (so you'll probably get the virus in your inbox a number of times)
Think of it was making a prank call, but someone else's number shows up on the victim's caller id.

EDIT: If it's a huge problem, you can probably setup a rule or filter in your email program to just trash those messages, or at least more them to another folder.

EDIT 2: Is the subject of any of the 'returned mail' messages one of these?

Mass Mailer virus possibly.

Update the Virus scanning software and run a scan. You can also go on line to a site like http://www.trendmicro.com and do an online scan if the scanning software is either out of subscription, broken, not installed... etc.

Again thanks all. I got my problem fixed last night by downloading a small program called "SpyBot" from www.download.com.

Very cool, and now my 'puter is running sweet again.

Shame really as I have wanted to smash the shit out of it for ages.

Get a decent firewall too. Virii aren't restricted to just email attachment. I use ZoneAlarm - simple to use and set up.
