SkydiveNFlorida 0 #1 September 2, 2003 I was awarded financial aid this semester via federal pell grant. Some money went toward classes, other $$ i'll use for books. What happens with unused funds? Do I get a check for those, or do they disappear? I already have the calculus book, but i'll buy a new one and sell it for cash in order to get xtra $$ if I have to, i'm broke! Anyone know if I get any of this in cash? angela.
TB99 0 #2 September 2, 2003 Hey, go to accounting at your school and request a check for the remaining balance on your account. That may work ... not sure if the Pell Grant will let ya or not, but some grants will let ya just request a check. Worth the shot! Good job and good luck Trailer 11/12 was the best. Thanks for the memories ... you guys rocked!

SkydiveNFlorida 0 #4 September 2, 2003 Thanks, Tamer! I will do that tomorrow after purchasing the chem book with the funds. How are Cocoa & Mary Jane doing? Must be gettin' big, huh? Hiya, Bodypilot! I've got 25 jumps in so far. Trying to get some RW in, i'd like to do some tracking dives with people, too, maybe just following around a good tracker. What's up with getting into CRW? You ever get that together in Sebastian? I thought you guys were gonna start CReW days or something.? I'd like to get in on that sometime if you're willing to teach, though right now it's costing me a lot less to jump in Z-hills so I might be frequenting there a bit more. I will get up to Deland next month sometime to do canopy coaching. Angela. Angela.
skycat 0 #5 September 2, 2003 I'm not 100% sure on the Pell alone, but I received one every year + some scholarships and always got a check after everything that the school was going to take out was removed. The college I went to didn't remove the money for books them selves I had to buy them with the check they gave me, they just took out for classes and housing, so when I moved off campus, I got a bigger check those semesters.Fly it like you stole it! skytrixaz 0 #7 September 3, 2003 Here's the Federal Pell Grant's website: http://www.studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/2003_2004/english/types.htm This is what is on the website concerning your questions: How will I be paid? Your school may credit the Pell Grant funds to your school account, pay you directly (usually by check), or combine these methods. The school must tell you in writing how and when you’ll be paid and how much your Pell Grant will be. Schools must pay you at least once per term (semester, trimester, or quarter). Schools that don’t use formally defined, traditional terms must pay you at least twice per academic year.*
jessd 0 #8 September 3, 2003 I usually got the extra money in a check a few weeks into the semester. Sometimes, I got this even when I had to take loans out to help pay for books and parking. PM me if you have any other questions about Financial Aid - I went for 6 yrs and know more than I probably want to about all of that. moodyskydiver 0 #11 September 3, 2003 I've had a Pell Grant before.Whatever isn't used for your tuition, fees, books, etc will be given to you via refund check after 60% of the semester is complete.I was supposed to have one this year but they said my family makes too much $,which is BS b/c we make less than we did last yr b/c my mom took a paycut and dad quit one of his jobs.So I'm processing several loan applications now.Another example of govt. rectal cranial inversion. But to answer the question, yes whatever isnt used will be refunded to you. "...just an earthbound misfit, I."
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #12 September 3, 2003 Thanks all! I can't wait to get that check!! But, on another note, reading up on them, I see that you don't get grants for summer, but that any extra $$ left during fall or winter may be applied toward summer, ask school for more info. So, I may have to leave it there for summer cuz I can't take off summers, I get the most done over the summer. thx again! Angela.
PhreeZone 20 #13 September 3, 2003 They won't just leave it "floating" on your account. They will make you do that for your self. I used to go year round and it was hard not to spend the excess money left over in the spring by the time the summer semester rolled around. I basically had to stick the money in the savings then pulled it out to transfer back to the school every summer.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
SkydiveNFlorida 0 #14 September 3, 2003 Darnit! Ok, well, I know I will spend it if they sent it, i'll just plan on paying for it when summer comes around, then... or i'll apply for a loan or something. Thx! Angela.

But to answer the question, yes whatever isnt used will be refunded to you. I've got two daughters in college who are struggling to raise the money to stay there. The Government says we are worth too much, so they won't let them borrow much, so we are struggling to make up the difference in personal loans. Actually my wife knows more about this than I do. She handles the money, but in just the past few years we've added about $40,000 to our own personal debt in an effort to help our kids. We don't make all that much, but we have some real estate that I bought in the old days while working as a logger. It has a log house on it that I worked my rear off to build. Cut the logs myself and hauled them behind a pickup, cut the shingles myself.. That's how I got that big hump in my back. At any rate I'm still able to jump, so I should quit complaining. But what really gravels my rear is when I see these rich farmer's kids going to school on almost a free ride. Do I sound a little like Archie Bunker? We live in a rural area. You know the one's who ride around in $50,000 diesel pickups and are too good to talk to you because they have money up the kazoo. Supposedly they are going broke every year (on paper) and the government cuts them a break to let their kids go to college with lots of grants and low interest loans. I don't mean to slam all farmers, and I'm thinking real negative here. But I wish the damn government would give the poor working stiff a break once in a while. It costs a damn fortune to go to school now days. I worked my way through undergraduate and grad school without many loans. It's a heck of a lot harder now. Our jump club is a college club, yet it has almost no college students in it, other than the occaisional tandem. It just costs too much to do both. I like to bitch a lot, but these college costs are getting me down. I just hope it's worth it for my daughters to go. For those of you who are struggling through college, hang in there. I wish you the best.......Steve1

But to answer the question, yes whatever isnt used will be refunded to you. As Moody pointed out - you may not qualify again down the road for the grant money. Most people never get a grant....If you still have more school down the line, save the cash - even put it in a short term CD - and use it for the next semester of school or save it for when your Title IV or third party loans come due 6 months after your last class. While a a few jumps or a new rig may look like the best way to spend the extra, its better not to touch the excess grant money._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... SkydiveNFlorida 0 #17 September 3, 2003 Looks like i'll be getting back 500+$ If I were to take 3 more credits, discounting the expense of it, I would get back a net of 1800$! But, I really can't take 3 more credits. I'm already a week behind in these classes and will be hard pressed to catch up. But, 500$ will be nice. No, it will not be saved. But, on the up side, they put 400$ away toward my Summer college because i'm a part time student, so i'll have that there come summer:) I'll still be poor when I reapply, so hopefully i'll get the grant again:p Angela.
