Computer is SNAFU. Help!?

Recommended Posts

I'm having a problem with Excel. When I click on an excel file, the computer tries to load MS Office from a CD I don't have. Even the Excel icon on the desktop didn't work. I managed to fix the desktop icon by replacing it, but excel files still won't open. However, if I click on the excel desktop icon and open excel first, then I can click on the excel files and they work fine. Anyone have any ideas how I can make these excel files work without first having to open excel?

Sounds like your OS messed up it's ability to associate certain files to the creator type.

Shit it's been so long since I touched a WinBlows box I'm digging my gray matter to figure how you can re-establish the file association.

Where's CrazyIvan when you need him?

Anyway, I think if you start by right-clicking on say Excel file icon to show it's properties, I think you should be able to figure out how to fix it.

WHat version of Windows are you running?

In WXP, I do this to redo file associations:

From My Computer, then "Tools", then "Folder Options", then "File types"

Scroll down to Microsoft Excel Worksheet (XLS extention), and you should be able to change you file associations by clicking on "Change"

One thing you can do is click on Start > run

Type in excel /a
That will bring it back to the original state. Keep in mind if you created rules or moved toolbars and such, they will most likely be gone.

that also works with Word... winword /a

and the rest of the office Suite.

Also, go to windows Update, click on Office update, and update the heck out of all the office products.

You may need to re-establish some file assosiations, as suggested above

Update your Virsus Defs and look for Virus's. msblaster screwed up office pretty good on some sytems. Windows and Office update fixed it.

If your computer has msblast or welcha, go to symantec and download the removal too.

Look in Task manager to find out.
- - delete
task manager => processes, click on image name to sort alphabetically

Look for msblast.exe and or,
DLLHOST.EXE coupled with a capitolized SVCHOST.EXE

If you see either, download the removal tools from symantec, and run em.

That's all I can think of right now.

good luck

Slight alternative to Masher's method, but basically doing the same thing...

You might want to (depending on the OS) do a right click on any XLS file icon and select "Open with" (if you have Win2000 or XP this should work - if you have 98 you'll need to hold down Shift whilst right clicking on the icon). It will bring up a list of applications, make sure the box "Always use this program to open these files" is ticked, select MS Excel from the list and click OK.

Good luck

Did that, found the xls extension, but it looked ok.

Didn't work either. Did all and clicked on "Always use this program to open these files", clicked OK, then the computer tried to install MS Office from a CD.

This really sucks. I've had nothing but problems with this damn computer since I got it.

No, its real easy, hold the shift key and "select" the excel doc by clicking on it (make it highlighted), then right click and hit open with... then find excel from the program list and make sure the box that is marked (always use this program) and hit okay. Then it will always use excel to open excell docs! A-okay!;)
