lawrocket 3 #1 September 8, 2003 Movies!!! Skydiving, lawyering, and even military stuff... Does anyone else have this problem? I saw Point Break on TV on Friday night. Goodness. I remember how cool I used to think those skydiving scenes were. Now I find them to be comedic - "Oh, please!" moments. The same is true for legal thrillers. That big scene where Tom Cruise is yelling at Colonel Jessup, "I WANT THE TRUTH!" in A Few Good Men? Then his arguing the facts to the judge? Knowing what I know about this stuff, he wouldn't have lasted 5 seconds into that rant before he received a serious and stern rebuke, included but not limited to brief arrest for contempt. Almost all legal thrillers do that for me. Even these somewhat realistic shows don't show all the time spent pouring over documents. It just seems ridiculous to me. I used to think this stuff was neat. I used to love watching these shows and movies. Now, I find it difficult, due to my education and training, to just be entertained by it. The comedic value for me is better than the dramatic effect. Sometimes I wish I still had my innocence. My wife is hotter than your wife.
AggieDave 6 #2 September 8, 2003 You know, you still have the good cartoons to watch! Family Guy Simpsons Futurama Those will still bring laughs, even with education and training. Then you've got the other cool shows to watch... Monster Garage Monster House OCC See, you still have quality TV time to use there, buddy! --"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." freeflir29 0 #3 September 8, 2003 Hehehehee....I don't know....One of my lawyers did something almost as bad to a witness that he knew to be lieing. There was some pretty good stuff before the judge put a stop to it. The hardest part for me was not laughing out loud. My lawyer "I don't give a fuck. I've been kicked out of courts all across this country." That guy was the Shiznits!!!
mr2mk1g 10 #4 September 8, 2003 I know what you mean... I'm still working up the guts to turn to a judge and say: Lionel Hutz: "you're honour... I move for a bad court thingy" Judge: "You mean a mistrial?" Hutz: Yeah! That's why you're the judge and I'm the law... talkin' guy. Judge: The lawyer. Hutz: Right." Simpsons rock, movies that get technical things wrong will always annoy those who know about that specific technical aspect.
Zenister 0 #5 September 8, 2003 its "suspension of disbelief" unfortunately most modern writers (and all hollywood types) cant be bothered to do enough research to at least allow the passing enthusiast of anything shown as entertainment to do so..they go with the simple, the easy because their target audience is in most cases completely ignorant of the reality behind the fiction i cant watch most fantasy/action (anything with swords in it) because modern actors have never learned basic fencing/sword play the way the used to and its to much bother to hire a technical advisor to help the "get it right" the last few Star Wars travesties are fine examples of using a sword (like device) like a broomstick and yet we are supposed to believe these are the premier warriors of the age....pleeeease..i know 12 year old that could hand these fools their heads...____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. Blahr 0 #6 September 8, 2003 What do you think about "Law and Order" from a lawyers perspective?
lawrocket 3 #7 September 8, 2003 Though I don't watch much TV, Law and Order was not that bad. It showed a lot of the mutual respect and generally reasonble way the attorneys usually act. Even the judges are fairly legit, making rulings and saying, "then you've got an issue to appeal." What they don't show is a lot of the grunt work that goes on. A lot of the job is just going over documents and preparing, though they do show the thinking and strategy. I guess it'd be a cop watching a movie where the heroes manage to shoot a number of people without ever being put on administrative leave or subject to any investigation. At least Law and Order gets most stuff right, from what I've seen. My wife is hotter than your wife.
