Deuce 1 #2 September 10, 2003 More reinforcement that Islam is a religion of peace. I love it. A doll that can destroy a culture. That Barbie is badass.

vonSanta 0 #4 September 11, 2003 Hooray for Barbie! Once Stripper Barbie and Crack Addict Barbie comes out in large number, i'm buying some for my brothers four girls. And oh, the Saudis aren't ruled by a tyrannical family of despot - and they're western friendly and our pals. Yeah. wmw999 2,588 #5 September 11, 2003 The Saudis have institutionalized fundamentalism. They don't have the long history of personal freedom that we do; even if there were to be a fundamentalist coup, this would be unlikely to happen in the US because of our long tradition. But this is exactly what you get when fundamentalists (could be religious, could be ideological) take hold in a place where people are used to absolute power from above. Saying Barbie is evil isn't that far removed in some ways from saying America deserved 9/11 because of tolerance of homosexuals, or that Halloween is a satanist ritual. We're just really really used to Barbie, so she seems pretty harmless. There are people in America whose daughters don't play with dolls because God said not to make any graven images. And there are people in Americal whose daughters don't play with Barbie because her clothes are too skimpy and she's too, um, well-rounded. Again, we have a tradition of personal liberty, so those people rule their families or congregations, not the country. Power is an interesting thing. THANK GOD!!!.......more evil has been done by religious fanatics than you can shake a stick at....... strange that in this day and age people still have such narrow minds... Amazon 7 #8 September 11, 2003 QuoteAgain, we have a tradition of personal liberty, so those people rule their families or congregations, not the country. Except that in the here and now there are those.. within this government that seek to force EVERYONE to believe in THEIR God... in THEIR beliefs.. in THEIR interpretation of freedom. They believe they are right.. and seek to control everyone else to think in the same way or else. Those who do not believe as they do need not apply and its a very short trip to living in a fundamentalist country where only the Kabalists have power. I think I read some Sci-Fi like that 40 years ago. Amazon
wmw999 2,588 #9 September 11, 2003 QuoteI think I read some Sci-Fi like that 40 years ago. Probably Heinlein's "If this goes on." Gotta love Nehemiah Scudder. I agree we're getting scarily close. Redefining your world so things you don't understand aren't legal doesn't make them not exist, it just makes you narrrowminded. Amazon 7 #12 September 11, 2003 I do believe you know of the book of which I was thinking. I read MOST of Heinleins work when I was a girl. The world of the future for a girl looked so much better than 50's America reality. That "reality" is what some would have us return to.. and extend it further this time. The politics of exclusion. falxori 0 #16 September 11, 2003 i really have no idea. there are a lot of similarities in the views and values and both were developed from the same origins. then again, so did islam. personally i see religion (all religions) as a human invention needed in order to explain things that couldn't be explained at the time by other means. how do radical islamic (or jews or christians for that matter) see progress? that's another issue there are also very religious jews and christians that would like to put barbie on the black list, but lucky for us they are not in control and to your question, i guess some of them see everyone who is not them, in the same light. anyway, my dispute with them is cultural, not religious. and in that sense i guess modern USA and Israel share the same culture...
