for now, i'm reading the book, and in a way its better than any of the movies... B|

O

Of course it is!!! And it always will be, but I have to say that it's rare to feel that kind of magic on screen. The characters have been completely brought to life, and almost exactly as I would have imagined them!

I intentionally didn't re-read the books in anticipation of the movies like a lot of my friends did. I wanted to let the movies stand on their own, and I think they've done a fantastic job. I didn't want the book fresh in my mind so that I wouldn't notice discrepancies.

But, after I see the last movie I plan to read them again because it really is a great read. Tolkien is a master of imagery. And Jackson did one hell of a job bringing that imagery to life.

Spielberg should take some tips from him on how to incorporate an animated character without making it look horrendously out of place and comical.

on that note, I have to comment on Gollum.

I have read the book many times, and I always understand Gandalf's pity for gollum, but never really felt it. Watching TTT, and the smeagol/gollum debate, I felt it for the first time. They make him pity-able. And he is not even a 'real' character. That is still one of the most impressive arguments to me about how different mediums have different strengths. I am always amazed when I hear people say they hated that scene...

WHAT??!!! He's not real? Damn, you'd think so, watching him. You are correct, he is INCREDIBLE!

Me too- gullum, "my precious" became so outrageously pity-able in the theatre compared to reading the book.

Well sorta... the guy who did the voice also acted as gollum when they were shooting the scenes wearing a suit with those points on the joints so they could skin Gollum onto him using CGI. He sounded like and acted like but it doesn't look like him

Did you see the Gollum acceptance speech on MTV? WOW....awesome.

Oh, that was complete genius...I thought it was one of the most creative things I've ever seen!
Sorry, I'm a little bit of a Gollum fan, even if he IS evil (throughout most of the story, anyway).

Trust me, I know. I've seen every special, every documentary, that they've had on LOTR. On that note, did you know that Christopher Lee knew Tolkein and was given his approval to play Gandalf should they ever make a movie? The reason he ended up as Saruman, however, is because he's been type-cast forever as the "bad guy" and just fits that part better...Saw that on AMC or something like that back in February.

Well....who else could have carried it off?
You need someone with presence, latent evil, obvious power/authority etc.....

Yeah, Peter Jackson actually got a bit of a kick out of drawing on the old 'dracula' days of Lee, I saw that somewhere. Who says Gollum is evil? I think that could be a very long running debate. Personally, I think he is far from evil.

And, for those who did not now, although obviously txblondie will :P, Sirkus was supposed to only be his voice. When he was recording he got so into the character of the voice, they decided to do motion capture.

Yes, yes, I knew. And he did some crazy stunt work, too. In the scene where he's flopping around in the stream trying to catch a fish, the water was freezing. It took like 20 takes to shoot the scene, in between shots, he was wrapped in thermal blankets. When they got to the set in the morning, they found the whole area frozen over. It took them till 1:00 in the afternoon with fans and heaters to thaw the area they needed to use, and if you look closely in the movie, you can still see some ice on the edges of the stream!:)

Most really good movies, have a large degree of realism in them. Easy Rider could pratically be a documentary.

Tolkien and LOTR just kicks ass anyway you cut it. Jackson has got to be one of the best filmmakers of all time to do what he has for this epic.

Yes, he is. And he has a new movie coming out. I don't remember what it's called but I know I really wanted to see it.
