darkvapor 0 #1 September 12, 2003 How many popups has your Google-Bar™ blocked? 940 for me. http://toolbar.google.com/
Casch 0 #2 September 12, 2003 I have no pop-up blocker and I don't seem to need one Seriously though, I rarely get pop-ups. If you install either Ad-aware or Spybot - Search and Destroy, preferably both, you can get rid of all the spyware (i.e. pop-ups) and crap on your computer that I'm guessing is causing 90% of those popups
Viking 0 #3 September 12, 2003 don't need it, Mozilla has a built-in pop-up blocker.I swear you must have footprints on the back of your helmet - chicagoskydiver My God has a bigger dick than your god -George Carlin
darkvapor 0 #4 September 12, 2003 Heheh, no .. I guess I just surf too much. I don't have any of that spyware installed. I have a firewall on all the time. Along with the usual VirusScan. Ad-aware finds nothing, and I know I have nothing.. But things like weather.com, and a lot of news sites will always give you one popup from an advertiser. Visit those sites 10 times a day and those popups get annoying too..
Casch 0 #5 September 12, 2003 A firewall won't generally stop spyware because most of the time your computer readily accepts it through flash documents and other online media, it sort of snakes it's way onto your computer but rarely actually breaks any "rules" and most virus scans won't have definitions for spyware as it's not technically a virus. You're right the news site popups are just plain annoying popups directly from the news site, but as I said earlier, 90% of pop-ups that people get are generated from their own computers...bah... airann 1 #6 September 12, 2003 I just started using it very recently and its 72. I really like it. Google is my home page. I was getting involved in the pop wars semi frequently. Very annoying. What the hell is a Blog... that orange button deal? I havent pushed it. It may be like the Borg on Star Trek. Oh man, then its over. THa BOrg... darkvapor 0 #7 September 12, 2003 Perhaps, but none of my popups are generated when I'm not actively surfing. If popups started appearing randomly throughout the day, then I would suspect something like that gator software or another spyware, but all of my popups come from news sites and similar popups. I keep my firewall security settings very high, and very few programs have internet access. In fact, I block many microsoft applications and processes from internet access as well. But I didn't start this thread to discuss popups and their causes, just to see people's success stories and numbers from the google-bar, which I think is great. I've used the googlebar since it originally came out, and now its starting to take on some cooler features than just being an interface to the google search engine. jfields 0 #18 September 12, 2003 Only 27 in a month or so. But that is after they get through a pop-up-blocking proxy filter I set up. Between the two, I get none.
AndyMan 7 #19 September 12, 2003 None. I use Mozilla, because it's faster. For reasons yet unknown, google doesn't make a googleBar for Mozilla. That's fine, because all of its features are built into Mozilla, anyways. I haven't had an unwanted pop-up in over a year. Yay! _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. PhillyKev 0 #20 September 12, 2003 How about wanted pop-ups? Does Mozilla give you an option to disable the blocker for certain sites that you need pop-ups to work? And does it alert you when it blocks one in any way?
jfields 0 #21 September 12, 2003 We can't use Mozilla, for compatibility reasons. So we use IE with blocking and keep a clean system that does what we want.
jfields 0 #22 September 12, 2003 You hit one of the reasons we use the system we do. Blocks everything we don't want, but lets us choose to allow the pop-ups we need.
