QuoteWhat an interesting fact. You have no experience in AS400, which she ask for, and I do have, and yet you tell me to learn to STFU....
He answered the part of the question that doesn't require any knowledge specific to AS400. It makes perfect sense to me (8+ years programming). On the other hand, some of your answers to computer related questions in different threads have been, umm, dubious at best.

That's a fight I would pay to watch...though she is right...hey, everyone just simmer down now..no need for a cyber brawl...should one occur..I'll bust out the popcorn.

Agreed. PDS's answer made perfect sense to me as an IT guy.

Me too...and I'm just a bored college student.

PDS privided an answer that was probably right had we been talking about programming, but since we're talking about the day to day administration of an AS/400 (A unique beast indeed!), I think that PDS's answer was wrong. I'm not exactly sure what the right answer is, but I'm pretty sure that it's not dealing with libraries as you and I might understand them.

duh, when dealing with libraries you need your library card. that HASS to be the problem.

Most likely what you are wanting to do is going to be WAY too complcated to try and explain in a fourm or even over a email. I can grap one of our AS400 guys and ask but odds are its best to RTFM

And tomorrow is a mystery

QuoteYou hiring for an AS400 admin?
Thankfully, no. If I have my way, never.

On MVS, the JCL used to start up the region contains a list of the libraries that it points to. The libraries are also searched in the concatenation sequence. For MVS, the region is assigned to an initiator. Selecting the initiator and browsing the startup deck will tell you which libraries are selected and in what order.
Of course, this is MVS, not AS400, but the concepts sound the same. Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

actually, jim, here we are dealing with libraries in much the same way as most operating and development environments do. what may be throwing you off is that the code appears (to me, from what i am reading) to be addressed in a sql'ish nature.
unless i am completely offa my rocker, libraries, even in this context, continue to be logical collections of related code and [classes|objects|routines] (depending on the flavor) and specifically in this case, the compiled libraries referenced and utilized by the operating environment.
in regards to the java v .net q: java programmers are still in demand and will continue to be indefinitely. .NET environment is actually a good idea and from my experience tooling around in the various flavors it's platform independance will be much more pronounced that the current java release. i still say that c# is the javakiller. jmho.
