help with ibm as400

Recommended Posts

I am still learning on this system, we have test and development 'regions', each pointing to some libraries (ie, batcht points to test libraries, batchp points to production libraries). How do I look at these regions to see what libraries to see what libraries are being used?

or, how about the question, objects are to libraries, as libraries are to what?

Thanks for any help. I always feel like a real ass when it comes down to doing anything out of day-2-day on this system. :|

Angela.

books? there is not really a parent to a library. library is a logical collection of related code and classes.

p.s. have you been dringking?:P

Sorry Angela, but obviously this guy has no clue that you are talking about computers. Will try to see if I could get you the info you are requesting...

my answer makes perfect sense and in fact is a, hmmm, dare i say it, FACT.

the reason it seems vague and incomplete is that you are again speaking out of turn to a subject you know nothing of.

i can only imagine that there are more than a few people who are tired of hearing your inane ranting, persistently offensive and flagrant baiting.

go away please.

sorry angela. can give you info on programming philosophy but no direct experience in as400 environment. see above. good luck.

What an interesting fact. You have no experience in AS400, which she ask for, and I do have, and yet you tell me to learn to STFU....

That seems pretty smart, and very peaceful....particularly on the portion you see others as stupid.

*yeah! following Rhino's theory*

He answered the part of the question that doesn't require any knowledge specific to AS400. It makes perfect sense to me (8+ years programming). On the other hand, some of your answers to computer related questions in different threads have been, umm, dubious at best.

Agreed. PDS's answer made perfect sense to me as an IT guy.

jimbo and i seem to have come up with the same hits re: your Q.

take a look at this post.

also- you are going to find that you will get a much more qualified and targeted answer if you ask it in an as400 usenet group.

good luck. i don't envy you. lol.

PDS privided an answer that was probably right had we been talking about programming, but since we're talking about the day to day administration of an AS/400 (A unique beast indeed!), I think that PDS's answer was wrong. I'm not exactly sure what the right answer is, but I'm pretty sure that it's not dealing with libraries as you and I might understand them.

You hiring for an AS400 admin? :)

Most likely what you are wanting to do is going to be WAY too complcated to try and explain in a fourm or even over a email. I can grap one of our AS400 guys and ask but odds are its best to RTFM :D

I saw the question as "How can I tell which libraries are being used by what region?" A group of compiled programs are kept in test/production libraries.

On MVS, the JCL used to start up the region contains a list of the libraries that it points to. The libraries are also searched in the concatenation sequence. For MVS, the region is assigned to an initiator. Selecting the initiator and browsing the startup deck will tell you which libraries are selected and in what order.

Of course, this is MVS, not AS400, but the concepts sound the same. Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. :)

Wow! Thanks for everyones help/offers for help! The situation has been rectified. The worst part is what they asked me to do, they found that i'd done a few months ago, and for the life of me I can't remember how I did it, although I do remember doing it. ugh, this is where notes would be handy. I'll look more into it later.

Sorry that this became a flame war. Thx again.

actually, jim, here we are dealing with libraries in much the same way as most operating and development environments do. what may be throwing you off is that the code appears (to me, from what i am reading) to be addressed in a sql'ish nature.

unless i am completely offa my rocker, libraries, even in this context, continue to be logical collections of related code and [classes|objects|routines] (depending on the flavor) and specifically in this case, the compiled libraries referenced and utilized by the operating environment.

in regards to the java v .net q: java programmers are still in demand and will continue to be indefinitely. .NET environment is actually a good idea and from my experience tooling around in the various flavors it's platform independance will be much more pronounced that the current java release. i still say that c# is the javakiller. jmho.

p.s. in regards to my previous answer and given the minimal introduction to the concepts given in that usenet post: although libraries appear to be contained within qsys.lib, that relation is implicit, leaving the library as the logical top level container. that was the question i was attempting to address. and yes, you are correct, i was thinking about a development environment. thanks for the constructive disagreement.

somebody who knows what they are talking about tell me to STFU please....:P
