skydiverek 63 #1 August 11, 2011 Can anyone tell me how the cutaway system works on a cutaway rig (with three canopies)? I am specifically asking about the system used at 1:38 in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYAu14drML4 How would this system perform in high G (spinning) malfunction, if there are no 3-rings there to reduce the force? (from what I can see).
pchapman 280 #2 August 11, 2011 I just looked and thought about this really quickly but: Looks like it is a 3 ring system, just they can't be easily seen except at the moment of chop, due to the webbing handles infront of the 3 rings. So it is one of those systems where one has main risers that have extra big ring attached. Chop the 3rd canopy from them, then deploy one's main. This system avoids having a whole other cutaway housing and handle system. BUT it means the cutaway system from your possible spun up, trashed, small proto canopy depends on two individual handles (not one), and is on one's risers, where they might be hard to access if it spins up into line twists down into the risers. And don't accidentally pull your chest cutaway first or the 3rd canopy tries to drag your main out of the pack. I can't recall offhand but that's sort of a Rob Harris error. So what do you do if you can't get to 2 separate cutaway handles on the main risers? I guess dump your regular main into the mess, then do a conventional cutaway with your chest handle and go for your reserve. They must have their reasons but I'd go with separate harness mounted rings and cutaway system, not the piggybacked cutaway-from-main-riser system. PhreeZone 20 #3 August 11, 2011 Also of note is the second main is actually opened with a left hand instead of a right side handle. Here is a flaw in the system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ9QxBU4c9M&feature=related during this cutaway they are unable to release the main and just fired the reserve into it basically.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
councilman24 37 #4 August 12, 2011 Here is a picture of a similar rig. The golden knight's cutaway rig. The two handle 'first' cutaway system is on the second canopies main risers. Note the 'normal' three ring on the bottom against the table and the first two handed one center of the frame. The second photo is of a cover for the PC handle for the second canopy. So that both are right handed but the second one isn't deployed first. What I don't like about this system in general is that you can't choose to abort the cutaway canopy deployment and go straight for the 'second' main that you plan on landing. I can envision a lot of situations where I'd want the choice of which 'main' to deploy. But with the knights system the first, cutaway canopy, is packed on top of the second, intended to be landed, main. Somewhere I also have pictures of Strongs intentional rig for tandem master training. I've jumped it. It has two complete sets of housings and cables going to two sets of risers attached to on harness ring. And the handles are set up like a strong tandem rig. Since I'm not a tandem master I really didn't like that! Back in the 80's I added separable main rings to the front of a harness and built a chest container for a round. A throw out PC was mounted to it. You exited and deployed the chest mount. Each riser had it's own short and captured cutaway handle/cable on it. When you cut away you went back into freefall with the normal rig. Not eligant but certainly simpler. I made it to play with and for a guy who wanted to be a tandem master to do an intentional cutaway since he didn't have a live one.I'm old for my age. skydiverek 63 #5 August 12, 2011 There is also a different system, which better mimics the normal cutaway procedures. It is used by UPT on their Skyhook intentional cutaway rig. First two canopies are packed like on a normal rig (on your back). But both can be cutaway. Third canopy is chest mounted and cannot be cutaway. So, your cutaway handle sequence is the same as you would use on your sport rig in a real emergency. Pull the cutaway handle, pull the reserve handle. Same handle locations, same sequence. On very rare occassions , IF the second canopy malfunctions, pull the second canopy cutaway handle (located on your chest), pull the third canopy reserve handle (located on your belly/chest). Plus side is that no canopy is dependent on the other, so deploying canopy number 1, 2, or 3 _first_ would work.
councilman24 37 #6 August 12, 2011 UPT's system demonstrates the skyhook in a 'normal' cutaway stituation and provides a third canopy for back up. But for intentional cutaways for demo or other purposes one of the other systems is probably preferred. With no need to demonstrate the function of the normal reserve deployment system that reserve is better left for the final chance to live than a 2nd canopy cutaway system that is unusual and a chest mount reserve that the jumper may have no experience with. In other words if your purpose isn't to demonstrate the reserve container on the rig, have the first canopy you intend on cutting away the oddball one, not the last canopy that is your final reserve.I'm old for my age.
