PhreeZone 20 #1 August 8, 2011 I know the regulations state that the rigger must seal the rig using their unique combo on the seal. Are only letter placed there by a seal press valid or can you legally do something like scratch them in if you don't have your seal press? Also I have recently ran across a seal where it has three letters on each side of the seal but the letters do not match and another where the letters are very fancy and it took a few times looking to see what the combo was. Is there a standard on what the letters need to comply with like there is on N numbers on airframes?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
LouDiamond 1 #2 August 8, 2011 yes, you can scratch your seal letters in manually on the lead seal."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
wildfan75 1 #3 August 8, 2011 I know a rigger that has his official FAA seal on one side and "MBG" on the other. I going to assume that you just need your official seal on one side. "MBG" is Money Back Guarantee. If you're reserve fails to open, he'll give you your money back, guaranteed.
councilman24 37 #4 August 8, 2011 There is no standard. I've seen lots of reverse die engravings. Skulls, logos, etc and I have my license number on the back seal. This is what the regs say: § 65.133 Seal. Each certificated parachute rigger must have a seal with an identifying mark prescribed by the Administrator, and a seal press. After packing a parachute he shall seal the pack with his seal in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation for that type of parachute. Old riggers were told, and I think we've passed on, that you could press a seal with smooth faced pliers or similar and scratch you symbol into it. At least until you got your dies. You could read the reg as requiring a die with your symbol and something to press it with, and scratching not allowed. Certainly an inspector expects to see a 'normal' pressed seal with engraved symbol. I DO have a letter from Carol Giles at FAA saying that until a manufacturer specifies a non-lead seal (paper, plastic, etc) that the Parachute Rigger Handbook published by the FAA is the only approved method. It uses a lead seal.I'm old for my age. Terry Urban D-8631 FAA DPRE
