Jumps/year to be worth buying used gear or new gear?

Recommended Posts

Haven't done a calculation on this yet (as I'd have to get a handle on gear depreciation to do) so wanted to ask people general feel/understanding of how many jumps per year would you typically be better off either (a) buying 2nd year, or (b) buying new year, as opposed to continuing to rent drop zone gear.

QUESTION: How many jumps/year would be the threshold to take the novice skydiver from being better off financially NOT renting the local dropzone gear, but rather buying their own gear. In fact for the cases:

a) used gear (i.e. would still be financially better off buying 2nd gear than renting)
b) new gear (i.e. would still be financially better off buying new gear than renting)

I'm assuming here that if you were only going to say 2 jumps / month you might be better off renting gear perhaps, but more than this at some point you'd hit being better off buy 2nd hand gear. Then part b) is kind of more, at some point if you like the idea of new gear, you could convince yourself the additional cost of new gear included you'd still be better off than renting.

My assumptions here (and jump in and correct me if I'm wrong) is I'm assuming there will be fixed costs with your own gear no matter how many jumps you do such as the below.
* inspections
* reserve repacks
* etc

Again just interested in some really rough idea based on experience people may already have if you've gone through the process of deciding if/when it's worth for you to get/buy your first rig.

If you want to skydive, buy your own gear, regardless of the jumps you gonna make per year.

It's not smart to be a skydiver with only 20 jumps per year. You can,but you will not be current and you will add more risk.

Your own gear means, the same canopy every jump. The same handle location. You can decide to go to a boogie the last second without worrying from where you gonna find a gear. And at last ,you will be the one to chose your own rigger. Someone you trust.

How much is your life worth?? Don't cheap out when looking at buying gear,,,whether you make 20 jumps a year or 2000 jumps a year you're still depending on your gear to save your life.

The cost of gear is not fixed, because the value of a new rig falls much faster per jump than a used rig per jump. The difference in the initial devaluation is quite significant, as it might be quite feasible to resell after 1 or 2 years a used rig at almost no change in price, or even sell for more than you paid, but that is completely unrealistic for a new rig. This assumes you haven't overpaid for either the new or used rig. If money is no problem for you, then you should spend freely and support the industry :D, if not, then decide on how much your budget is and be patient as you buy wisely with help from an experienced person you can trust (doesn't necessarily have to be a rigger, but have one handy for a final inspection).
