bill2 0 #1 September 25, 2003 This was on MSNBC, reporting an 8.0 earthquake in Hokaido in northern Japan. A 7 ft tsunami was generated by the quake. http://www.msnbc.com/news/971921.asp?0cl=cR#BODY

lawrocket 3 #5 September 25, 2003 Yeah, we Californians can relate. Some places are devastated by 5.4 earthquakes. We shit those out here. But an 8.0 would bring us to our knees. For some food for thought, click here for some analyses about major quakes in the Bay Area. And I'd still take an earthquake over a tornado. My wife is hotter than your wife. bvsdjumper 0 #6 September 25, 2003 Anyone know what the largest known earthquake in history was? In this graphic from the Yahoo! story, 9 and over is described as "Near-total destruction, waves moving through the earth visible with the naked eye" That would be some scary ass shit to see! --ArtSky-div'ing (ski'div'ing) n. turtlespeed 226 #7 September 25, 2003 So if it was in Japan, isn't there something called a sunami that will reach us? I'm lazy and busy and don't want to research it...I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
dterrick 0 #8 September 25, 2003 7 foot tsunami??? Bah! I got sent ashore by the coast guard once in waves almost that big ... I was 15 (and immortal, btw) and in my wee 12 foot fishing boat on lake Winnipeg. The lake is shallow and 40 miles wide (actually classified as an inland ocean) and can whip up a storm in about 12 minutes flat. It did. These are the same winds that can play hell with jumpers (the other side of the lake from our cottage). All kidding aaside, best wishes to all affeced and here's hoping California doesn't fall off the edge of the world ... lawrocket 3 #9 September 25, 2003 I think the strongest ever recorded was a 9.5 that struck Chile in abotu 1960. I also know that in 1964, a 9.2 hit Alaska. Dem's bigguns! My wife is hotter than your wife.

Michele 1 #13 September 25, 2003 The United States Geological Service says it has a preliminary of 8.0, per their website...A better map is here. And Fast Moment Tensor Map is here. The waveforms are not yet accessible (that I could locate). Tsunami FAQs is a good place to start reading about tsunamis... lawrocket 3 #14 September 25, 2003 Tsunami? Heck, I dunno if it'll reach us. Maybe. We'll have to check the warnings. And dterrick, tsunamis aren't like your normal ocean waves. They are more like a sudden 7 foot rise in the water level, and not just one 7 foot breaker. Here's an actual picture of a tsunami hitting Hilo Hawaii in 1946 after an earthquake in Alaska. It's ripping up a pier. And yes, that is a man awaiting his fate in the lower left. Scary stuff... California is a good threat to get one eventually (my beloved Santa Barbara). lawrocket 3 #15 September 25, 2003 Here's another example of tsunami in action from 1957 in Oahu from another Alaskan earthquake (those pesky Alaskans). Watch these in order. Note how it isn't so much a wave as much as the water level rising suddenly. That would suck... My wife is hotter than your wife.
