Ok computer experts!!! you have never let me down yet, so try this one.;);)

My norton Internet security keeps popping up saying "a remote system is attempting to access C:windows/system32/Isass.exe on your computer"

It reccomends that i permit is!!

What is this *isass.exe* and why has this remote system been trying to access my system for the last hour, about every 5 minutes??? I have been permitting it most of the times.

isass.exe does not exist. See LSASS.EXE.

Windows NT4/2000/XP only. LSASS is the Local Security Authentication Server. It verifies the validity of user logons to your PC/Server (in technical jargon : it generates the process that is responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service).

This I can understabd running, but I've never noticed it connecting remotely. Are you on a work network?

Thanks for the quick reply Rev

I'm not on a work network, however, my computer is setup with XP network software. Does this mean that my computer is checking my login, or microsoft checking??

The way you described the knocks on the firewall, it sounds like someone on the outside trying to check on the inside. That service keeps tabs on user logins. Like Ivan said, make sure sharing is off (unless you connect remotely to work).

If this is not connecting to work (ie: it's just your home computer) deny access quite a few times. If it doesn't hurt anything, deny and remember (or whatever the setting is.) If you actually need to grant access in the future, you can easy go back into the firewall and give access back.

My general rule of thumb is if I'm not using a program directly and the computer will run without it getting net access, I disable access for it, until I need it.

It would also be a VERY good idea to turn off all non-essential services running on your machine. This will prevent security holes that could be exploited from affecting your computer.

You want to check out this link for some help perhaps.
