Meteorology is not all guessing, because it isn't just "weather prediction". It involves lots of tangible, factual things that are really cool. Watch videos of orthographic lifting (clouds forming over mountains as air masses squeeze over and force the moisture into droplets), sun dogs, the triple point of water, how hurricanes and tornados work, light refraction in water droplets, etc.

There is a lot to learn that doesn't involve standing in front of a computer-generated map spouting off what you think the weather will be next week.

Meteorology is cool!

ok get all serious on me....

I know that weather is a little more than a guessing game but I'm just bitter cause I pay embry-riddle for this class and I have yet to get anything out of it. Not to mention I have to wake extra early just to sit here and listen to my prof ramble on about stuff I already learned.

Why are you not getting anything out of it? Is it because it's stuff you already knew(perhaps from another meteorology class?) or because he/she is not teaching it well? Trust me, once you get out into the real world of aviation, meteorology is one of the most important things to know.

I work with too many people that can read the reports, but couldn't tell you anything about what may happen in the future by looking at some of the charts. Sometimes you really need to know how to do that.....such as when flying in the Arctic region, or in some of the lesser developed third world nations that do not have any type of current weather reporting or forecasting.

So...are you sitting in class right now, but surfing on DZ.com? :o

wake extra early

Screw that. My meteorology class was in the afternoon. ;)

What can I say? I liked meteorology. We had two levels of it when I was in college. One for general students, and an upper level version for physics majors. Since I was a physics geek at the time, I took the more advanced one, which was also a lot more interesting.

Everybody has had to take useless courses in college.

I'm spending my 3rd year in college and I have yet to take a useless course.

Skydiving is easy. All you have to do is relax while plummetting at 120 mph from 10,000' with nothing but some nylon and webbing to save you.

I had to take way too much chemistry. I will never use chemistry in my job. Hence, it's useless. I learned a great deal, and it made me a well-rounded individual, but I cannot apply what I learned in the insurance industry.

I find this attitude very problematic. What sad people we would be if all we cared about are things we can apply in our jobs. Come on, chemistry is really interesting! I also took a Chem course, a year-long course on Philosophy and a course on Psychology. I'm a Pure Mathematics/CS double major. I'm not saying that you are going to apply those courses in the real world, but it was still very interesting and educational. In particular the Philosophy course.

I did find it interesting, but it is useless. I'm glad I took it, but I will never use it. It's like anything else in life. I'm glad that I took physics, even though I will never use it.

I completely agree. Everyone will take courses in college that they will never use in real life. Heck, even the theoretical math classes I had to take I will never use. I never said it was a bad thing that we take college courses that are useless. I'm just saying that everybody takes them.

I have a friend that's a meteo grad student. Went out do dinner with him and a bunch of his meteo friends once. I had flown to his school, 215 nautical miles from home, so i was concerned about the next day's weather when I was going to be flying home. Not a single one of them could tell me what tomorrow's weather was going to be like.

I asked if the secret of weather prediction (always just say it MIGHT rain) gets taught to them at graduation or what.

I've seen some of my friend's homework. It was about predicting rain drop size. The math was more complicated than anything I ever saw in aerospace engineering. And he still cant tell me if it's going to rain tomorrow!

It was nice before leaving though. I got a better briefing on the thunderstorm activity i was going to have to dodge from him than I got from the flight service station. 215 nautical miles of "well, i can see to the left, cant see to the right, so i think i'll head left." FUN! :)

I've already taken two met classes and know the stuff he's teaching. But the great ermbry riddle gods say that my classes that I took aren't as good as theirs so I have to take it again. University politics YUCK!!!!!!>:(

Well you could just ingore the professor and post whore instead. ;) I know it sucks to be stuck in class, but once you're all graduated and a world famous pilot, it will all be worth it. At least you have the determiniation to follow your dreams. Chin up and keep that gorgeous smile on your face!! :)
